Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,490 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 492 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
A Boeing 737-600 departed from runway 30 at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, taking off with a speed of 146 knots. This marked the beginning of an extensive journey, which covered a distance of 1,284 nautical miles. The local weather at the time of departure showed a temperature of 15 °C, with a gentle headwind of 4 knots at an angle of 300 degrees.
Following takeoff, the aircraft transitioned into its enroute climb phase. This phase started over the Belgrade airport, where it initially climbed to an altitude of 39,131 feet, gaining a total of 37,765 feet in just 35 minutes. This climb phase covered a significant distance of 270 nautical miles, demonstrating the aircraft's impressive rate of ascent.
Once the enroute climb phase was completed, the aircraft began its level cruise phase. During this phase, it maintained a steady altitude for an extended period of 119 minutes, covering a substantial distance of 906 nautical miles. This phase was marked by a relatively steady speed and altitude, showcasing the aircraft's ability to maintain a stable cruise in various environments.
Following the level cruise phase, the aircraft entered its enroute descent phase, where it began its gradual descent to a lower altitude. This phase started about 8 miles south-east of Oulainen, Finland, where it descended from 39,258 feet to a mere 1,585 feet in just 12 minutes, covering a relatively short distance of 102 nautical miles.
Upon reaching a suitable altitude for final approach, the aircraft began its descent towards runway 18 at Kemi-Tornio Airport. The approach was made from the north, with the aircraft following a precise heading of 187.0 degrees. Local weather at Kemi-Tornio Airport reported a temperature of 10 °C, accompanied by a gentle headwind of 6 knots at an angle of 220 degrees.
The aircraft successfully landed on runway 18, where it touched down with a speed of 117 knots, just beyond the touchdown zone. While the touchdown speed was slightly higher than desired, the aircraft's rate of descent (-256 feet per minute) and runway alignment were deemed satisfactory. Following touchdown, the aircraft's rollout was exceptionally good, consuming only 36% of the 2,490-meter runway.
After securing the aircraft on the ground, it took less than a minute to taxi to the parking area, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. Overall, the flight demonstrated an impressive combination of speed, efficiency, and stability, utilizing approximately 7,267 kilograms of fuel over the course of the journey.
A Boeing 737-600 airliner completed a precise landing at EFKE Kemi-Tornio Airport, with an overall score of 99.2%. The aircraft was coming in for a landing on runway 18 from the north, following a heading of 187.0° and being at an altitude of 1,528 feet above ground level (agl) at a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The pilot's approach to the runway was excellent, resulting in a good threshold height and a slight increase in threshold speed to 128 kt, which was only marginally above the target speed. The touchdown point, however, was 69 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which suggests the pilot slightly overshot their desired landing spot.
Despite the slight deviation in touchdown position, the touchdown speed of 117 kt and the subsequent 256 feet per minute (fpm) descent rate indicate a relatively fast touchdown. However, the high landing rate was offset by the aircraft's ability to maintain perfect runway touchdown alignment.
Weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 10°C and gentle wind of 6 kt coming from 220°, resulting in a 3-kt crosswind and 5-kt headwind at the runway. The landing distance of 893 meters accounted for 36% of the runway length, a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's weight and size.
During the rollout phase following touchdown, the aircraft maintained excellent alignment with the runway, suggesting that the pilot's skills and the aircraft's performance were both on point. Overall, the landing was impressive, with only minor deviations from optimal performance.
