Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 152 m above the runway. The 305 m gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,704 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,704 m of the 2,993 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,066 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at LIBP Abruzzo Airport, taking approximately 8 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 04, with a takeoff distance of 57 meters, which is just 3% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 154 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it started its enroute climb overhead Pescara, Abruzzo, Italy. The climb took 15 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 308 meters above sea level to 10,665 meters above sea level, an increase of 10,356.4 meters. The aircraft covered a distance of 100 nautical miles during this climb.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, starting 6 miles south of Vinisce, Split-Dalmatia, Croatia. This phase lasted for 11 minutes and covered a distance of 82 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 4 miles southwest of Vitez, Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The descent took 21 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 10,670 meters above sea level to 917 meters above sea level, a decrease of 9,753.0 meters. The aircraft covered a distance of 112 nautical miles during this descent.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, starting 2 miles south of Golubinci, Autonomna Pokrajina Vojvodina, Serbia. This phase lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 2 miles northeast of Simanovci, Autonomna Pokrajina Vojvodina, Serbia. The descent took 2 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 917 meters above sea level to 519 meters above sea level, a decrease of 398.4 meters. The aircraft covered a distance of 4 nautical miles during this descent.
The final approach to runway 12 at LYBE Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport took place from the northwest, with the aircraft heading 122.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 415.9 meters above ground level. The aircraft landed on runway 12, which has a length of 2,993 meters. The threshold height was excessively over target, while the threshold speed was slightly below target at 129 knots.
The touchdown point was 574 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 126 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was fair at -1.3 meters per second. However, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 186.2 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance was 1,547 meters, which is 52% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 194.8 meters from the centerline.
The aircraft then taxiied to the parking area from the runway, taking approximately 5 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 310 nautical miles, taking 64 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,132 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 aircraft has successfully landed at LYBE Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. The final approach was initiated from the north-west, heading 122.0° at an altitude of 415.9 meters above ground level (agl) and 4 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft touched down on runway 12, which has a length of 2,993 meters.
However, the threshold height at 45.0 meters agl was excessively over the target, indicating that the aircraft was higher than it should have been at the point of touchdown. On the other hand, the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 129 knots, which is a relatively acceptable margin. The touchdown point was 574 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the ideal landing spot.
The touchdown speed of 126 knots was good, indicating that the pilot had managed to control the aircraft's descent and speed effectively. The touchdown rate of -1.3 meters per second was fair, suggesting that the aircraft had not touched down too hard or too softly. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 186.2 meters from the centerline, which could pose a risk to the aircraft's stability and control during the landing roll.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 23°C. The total landing distance of 1,547 meters was 52% of the runway length, which is a relatively acceptable margin. However, the runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 194.8 meters from the centerline, which could indicate a loss of control or a deviation from the intended path during the landing roll.
Overall, while the Airbus A320 aircraft has successfully landed at LYBE Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, there are some areas for improvement in terms of precision and control during the landing phase. The pilot should focus on achieving a more accurate threshold height and touchdown point, as well as maintaining a more aligned runway touchdown position and rollout alignment.
