Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach that landed joined below the 1,000 ft and 500 ft gates, after a go-around. The gate assessed on the earlier approach is not shown - it was not the landing's.
Side view — the last 1,099 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,099 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 481 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Pattonville Airfield, the Kodiak 100 began its journey with a smooth taxiing process, taking just 1 minute to cover less than 1 nautical mile to the runway. With a takeoff roll on runway 28, the aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 76 knots, clearing the ground in 473 meters, which accounted for 71% of the runway length. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 12°C and a gentle headwind of 2 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its initial cruising altitude, it passed overhead Kornwestheim, Germany, where it began its enroute climb, increasing its altitude from 1,126 feet to 4,037 feet in just 4 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles. The climb was followed by a brief level cruise, lasting 5 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 4,076 feet to 5,504 feet, in 2 minutes and 4 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise that followed, which lasted 7 minutes and covered 21 nautical miles, was the longest segment of the flight. As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent, reducing its altitude from 5,492 feet to 2,877 feet in 4 minutes and 10 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 29 at Grabenstetten Airfield was initiated from the southeast, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 311.0° at 3 nautical miles and 512 feet above ground level. However, a go-around was necessary due to the aircraft's low altitude. The second approach was successful, with the aircraft landing on the runway at a speed of 70 knots and a touchdown rate of 115 feet per minute. The touchdown point was 46 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline. The total landing distance was 808 meters, accounting for 74% of the runway length. The aircraft's total flight distance was 46 nautical miles, and it consumed 62 kilograms of fuel during the 21-minute journey.
The final approach to runway 29 at EDSG Grabenstetten Airfield from the south east was initiated at 3 nm and 512 ft above ground level, heading 311.0°. The approach quality was satisfactory, with the threshold height at 59 ft above ground level being slightly above the target. However, the threshold speed was excessively high at 108 kt, indicating a potential for a longer landing roll.
The aircraft touched down 46 m beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 70 kt, which was fast. The touchdown rate, however, was perfect at 115 ft per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.0 m from the centreline, which could have contributed to the slightly high touchdown speed. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 11 °C and a light headwind of 1 kt, were not particularly challenging.
The total landing distance was 808 m, which accounted for 74% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.5 m from the centreline. Overall, the landing performance was satisfactory, with a score of 83.5%. While there were some areas for improvement, such as the high threshold speed and slight misalignment during rollout, the pilot demonstrated good control and precision throughout the landing.
