Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,799 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,799 m of the 3,894 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 575 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 02 at LEBL Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,446 meters, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 153 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 12°C temperature and a wind speed of 10 knots at 320°. The crosswind was 9 knots, while the headwind was 5 knots. The enroute climb started overhead El Prat de Llobregat, a town in Catalonia, Spain, and continued to an altitude of 33,498 feet above sea level. This climb, which covered a distance of 93 nautical miles, took 17 minutes and involved an increase of 32,452 feet in altitude.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 64 miles north of Ferreries, a town in the Balearic Islands, Spain. This cruise phase lasted for 41 minutes and covered a distance of 335 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, which started 27 miles southwest of Santa Marinella, a town in Lazio, Italy. The descent from 33,161 feet to 25,836 feet took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 26 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 3 miles southwest of LIAR Furbara Air Base in Italy. This cruise phase lasted for 8 minutes and covered a distance of 11 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent once again, this time from 25,491 feet to 2,897 feet, a decrease of 22,594 feet in altitude. This descent took 13 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 2 miles southwest of Canale Monterano, a town in Lazio, Italy. This cruise phase lasted for 3 minutes and covered a distance of 11 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started 3 miles east of LIXU Campo di Volo Sangermano Valcanneto in Italy. The descent from 2,614 feet to 1,315 feet took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 16L at LIRF Rome–Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport was made from the north, heading 163.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,294 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 16L was successful, with a touchdown point 154 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 127 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -123 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 8°C temperature and a wind speed of 7 knots at 70°. The crosswind was 7 knots, while the headwind was 0 knots. The total landing distance was 1,713 meters, which accounted for 44% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking from the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 491 nautical miles, and the flight took 111 minutes. The aircraft used 4,199 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LIRF Rome–Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport on runway 16L. The final approach was executed from the north, with the aircraft heading 163.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,294 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good score of 98.1% throughout the landing process.
Upon reaching the runway, the aircraft touched down smoothly, with a touchdown speed of 127 knots, which was within the acceptable threshold speed of 136 knots. The touchdown point was 154 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, but this was still considered a good landing. The aircraft's descent rate was also smooth, at -123 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a controlled and stable approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 8°C and a gentle wind of 7 knots at 70°. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the headwind component was negligible at 0 knots. These conditions did not pose any significant challenges to the landing process.
The total landing distance was 1,713 meters, which accounted for 44% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down and come to a stop within a reasonable distance. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and controlled roll-out after touchdown.
Overall, the landing of the Boeing 737-800 at LIRF Rome–Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport was a successful and well-executed operation, with the aircraft demonstrating good control and stability throughout the approach and landing phases.
