Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,923 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 438 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 01L at San Francisco International Airport (KSFO). The takeoff distance was 1,283 meters, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 162 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 7 knots at 290 degrees. The crosswind was 7 knots, while the tailwind was 1 knot. After departing from KSFO, the enroute climb started 1 mile northeast of the airport, with the aircraft climbing from 1,049 feet above sea level to 34,852 feet above sea level. This increase of 33,803 feet was achieved in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 166 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began overhead Sparks, Nevada, and lasted for 1,341 minutes, covering a distance of 406 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 2 miles northwest of ID62 Simpson Airport in Idaho. The descent from 34,288 feet above sea level to 7,884 feet above sea level resulted in a decrease of 26,404 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 78 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 19 at Jackson Hole Airport (KJAC) was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 199.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,456 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 19 was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 136 knots. The touchdown distance was 439 meters, and the touchdown rate was -163 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The local weather conditions at KJAC were characterized by a temperature of -5 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots at 250 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 2 knots. The total landing distance was 1,401 meters, which accounted for 73% of the runway. The aircraft then taxied to the parking from the runway, which took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 657 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 99 minutes. The aircraft used 4,478 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at KJAC Jackson Hole Airport, showcasing exceptional piloting skills and adherence to standard operating procedures. The final approach to runway 19 was executed from the north, with the aircraft heading 199.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,456 feet above ground level (agl).
The landing was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was properly configured for the approach. The threshold speed of 141 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilots' ability to manage the aircraft's speed during the approach. The touchdown distance of 439 meters was also satisfactory, indicating that the pilots had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent.
The touchdown speed of 136 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -163 feet per minute (fpm) was also good, indicating a smooth and controlled touchdown. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilots' precision and attention to detail.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were not particularly challenging, with a temperature of -5°C and a wind speed of 3 knots at 250°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, and the headwind component was 2 knots, which did not pose a significant challenge to the pilots.
The total landing distance of 1,401 meters was 73% of the runway length, indicating that the pilots had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent and rollout. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilots' ability to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing of the Boeing 737-800 at KJAC Jackson Hole Airport was a textbook example of safe and controlled flight operations, with the pilots demonstrating exceptional skills and adherence to standard operating procedures.
