Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 300 ft gate: off the runway's 3° glideslope, off the centreline and speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,621 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,621 m of the 2,924 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,144 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the OV-10 Bronco taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Sherman Army Air Field, taking approximately 3 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 16, with a takeoff distance of 852 meters, which was 53% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 105 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Sherman Army Air Field, it encountered local weather conditions of 0°C temperature and a 6-knot wind at 247°. The enroute climb started overhead the airfield, with the aircraft ascending from 1,178 feet above sea level to 1,517 feet, an increase of 339 feet in 1 minute, covering 2 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 1 mile south-west of Weston, Missouri, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering 11 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its descent 2 miles west of Church's Landing Airport, Rushville, Missouri, descending from 1,442 feet to 976 feet, a decrease of 465 feet in 2 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles.
The flight continued with multiple enroute level cruises and climbs, with the aircraft passing over various locations, including Weston, Missouri; Church's Landing Airport, Rushville, Missouri; Booze Island Airport, St Joseph, Missouri; Elwood, Kansas; Wathena, Kansas; Lonesome Sky Airport, Craig, Missouri; Steele Airport, Fairfax, Missouri; Rock Port, Missouri; Garst Airport, Watson, Missouri; Hamburg, Iowa; Nebraska City, Nebraska; and Loess Hills Landing, Sidney, Iowa.
The final approach to runway 30 at Offutt Air Force Base began overhead Bellevue, Nebraska, with the aircraft descending from 2,625 feet to 1,059 feet, a decrease of 1,566 feet in 2 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then landed on runway 30, with a touchdown point 740 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 84 knots, and the touchdown rate was -150 feet per minute.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 2°C temperature and a 7-knot wind at 239°. The crosswind was 7 knots, and the headwind was 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,552 meters, which was 53% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The flight ended with the aircraft taxiing to the parking area from the runway, taking approximately 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 126 nautical miles, taking 40 minutes, and the aircraft used 268 kilograms of fuel.
The OV-10 Bronco aircraft successfully landed at Offutt Air Force Base, with a final approach from the southeast, heading 309.0° at 0 nm and 22 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 30, which has a length of 2,924 meters. However, the threshold height at 79 ft agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been higher than desired at the point of touchdown.
Upon further analysis, it appears that the threshold speed was also too high at 107 knots, which may have contributed to the aircraft's high altitude at the threshold. Despite this, the touchdown speed of 84 knots was within acceptable limits, and the touchdown rate of -150 feet per minute (fpm) was also good. The touchdown point was located 740 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant distance, but the aircraft's speed and rate of descent suggest that it was under control throughout the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 2°C and a wind speed of 7 knots from 239°. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots. These conditions may have contributed to the aircraft's slightly misaligned runway touchdown position, which was 3.6 meters off-centerline.
The total landing distance of 1,552 meters was 53% of the runway length, which is a relatively long distance but not excessively so. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively, and the aircraft was able to come to a stop in a controlled manner.
Overall, while there were some areas for improvement in the landing, the OV-10 Bronco aircraft demonstrated good control and handling throughout the approach and touchdown. With some adjustments to the approach speed and altitude, the aircraft should be able to achieve a more precise touchdown and reduce the landing distance.
