Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,753 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,753 m of the 3,008 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 475 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A320 began its journey by taxiing from the parking to the runway at HECA Cairo International Airport, a process that took 10 minutes to cover approximately 1 nautical mile. This marked the start of the flight as it rolled down the runway for takeoff from runway 05C.
During takeoff, the aircraft lifted off the ground with a liftoff speed of 162 knots, taking 54% of the 2,177 meters of runway available for the ascent. The conditions at departure were characterized by a temperature of 27°C, an easterly wind of 6 knots at an altitude of 350°, which generated a 5-knot crosswind and 3-knot headwind.
As the flight entered its enroute climb, it departed the airport's surroundings and began ascending to a maximum altitude of 36,592 feet, rising from a starting height of 1,409 feet. In this 25-minute period, the aircraft covered a distance of 170 nautical miles to reach a steady climb. Once the initial climb was achieved, the flight then entered level cruise conditions 11 miles west of HE20 Gabal El Zeit Airport. The cruise phase spanned for 63 minutes, with the aircraft maintaining a steady flight path and covering a significant distance of 481 nautical miles at level cruising altitude.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it entered the enroute descent phase at an altitude of 36,725 feet, beginning to descend towards a lower altitude of 3,398 feet. The descent took 15 minutes to complete, covering a distance of 82 nautical miles to establish final approach conditions.
The final approach and landing occurred at OEGS Gassim Airport, with the aircraft initially approaching from the northwest direction, descending and aligning its trajectory to hit the runway from the northwestern quadrant. The threshold height was reportedly good, and the touchdown speed was slightly faster than target at 131 knots.
Despite a fast touchdown speed, the aircraft maintained a fair touchdown rate of 261 feet per minute and managed to land within the acceptable parameters, although with a slight misalignment in touchdown position relative to the centerline of the runway. The total distance covered from the touchdown point to the end of the landing area was 1,675 meters, accounting for 56% of the available runway length. Upon completion of the landing and rollout, the aircraft demonstrated a very good runway rollout alignment, bringing it safely to a halt within a few minutes.
The last act of the flight involved taxiing from the runway to the parking area, which took 4 minutes and less than 1 nautical mile. After successfully completing the flight, the aircraft had covered a total distance of 743 nautical miles, requiring 2 hours and 16 minutes of flight time, and utilized approximately 5,291 kilograms of fuel.
A recent landing of the Airbus A320 aircraft at Gassim Airport's runway 15 has been evaluated, and the pilot's performance has been deemed satisfactory. The aircraft successfully approached the runway from the north-west at an altitude of 1,244 feet above ground level, following a heading of 153.0 degrees, 4 nautical miles away from the airport.
The pilot performed a good approach to the runway threshold, with an accurate height at the threshold point. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed, registering 140 knots. The touchdown point was located 62 meters beyond the touchdown zone, but this deviation did not seem to pose a significant hazard. Unfortunately, the touchdown speed of 131 knots was marginally faster than the ideal speed, and the touchdown rate was fair at -261 feet per minute.
Furthermore, the aircraft's runway touchdown position was slightly off-centerline, diverging by 4.7 meters from the runway's centerline. Despite this, the local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively favorable, with a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, and a low wind speed of 3 knots from the west. The resulting crosswind and headwind of 3 and 1 knots, respectively, did not appear to pose a significant challenge for the pilot.
Upon landing, the aircraft covered a total distance of 1,675 meters, which equates to approximately 56% of the runway's length. Although this distance may seem somewhat long, it is worth noting that the runway's length is 3,008 meters, and the landing performance of the aircraft can be considered acceptable. Most impressively, the runway rollout alignment was exceptionally good, demonstrating the pilot's ability to effectively bring the aircraft under control after touching down.
In summary, while there were a few minor deviations from the ideal landing performance, the pilot's overall performance in this landing can be deemed satisfactory. The aircraft, Airbus A320, landed safely on runway 15 at Gassim Airport, with the pilot successfully navigating the airport's local weather conditions and showcasing exceptional control over the aircraft during rollout.
