Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,242 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,242 m of the 3,049 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,307 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The Airbus A320 then departed from runway 27 at Logan International Airport (KBOS), with a takeoff distance of 1,375 meters, which accounted for 65% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 151 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 17°C temperature and a wind speed of 6 knots at 280°. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the headwind was 5 knots. The enroute climb started overhead the Avco/Lowell Heliport in Lowell, Massachusetts, where the aircraft ascended from 1,025 feet above sea level to 35,343 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,318 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 96 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, which started 5 miles north of Woodford, Vermont, and lasted for 45 minutes, covering a distance of 337 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 3 miles east of Straffordville Airport in Ontario, Canada, where the aircraft descended from 36,203 feet above sea level to 4,963 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,240 feet in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 105 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, which started 1 mile southeast of Clawson, Michigan, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles. The final descent began 1 mile south of Oak Park, Michigan, where the aircraft descended from 4,956 feet above sea level to 1,925 feet above sea level, a decrease of 3,030 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 21L at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (KDTW) was made from the northeast, with a heading of 209.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,283 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with the touchdown point being 885 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 112 knots, which was good, while the touchdown rate was fair at -299 feet per minute.
The total landing distance was 2,154 meters, accounting for 71% of the runway. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, but the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.1 meters from the centerline. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 564 nautical miles, taking 1 hour and 2 minutes, and the aircraft used 4,021 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed on runway 21L at KDTW Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, achieving an overall score of 83.9%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north east, heading 209.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,283 feet above ground level (agl).
The final approach to the runway was executed smoothly, with the threshold height being well above the target, indicating a safe margin for the aircraft to touch down. The threshold speed was also good, at 136 knots, which is within the acceptable range for a safe landing. The touchdown point was located 885 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively long distance but still within the runway's length.
The touchdown speed of 112 knots was also good, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down effectively before touching down. However, the touchdown rate of -299 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft may have touched down slightly harder than desired. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 12°C, which is relatively cool but not extreme. The total landing distance of 2,154 meters was 71% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
However, there was a slight issue with the runway rollout alignment, as the aircraft was misaligned by 9.1 meters from the centerline. This may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's trajectory during the rollout phase, but it did not appear to have any significant impact on the safety of the landing.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were a few areas for improvement, particularly with regards to the touchdown rate and runway rollout alignment.
