Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: gear still up and off the runway's 3° glideslope.
At the 500 ft gate: off the runway's 3° glideslope.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 980 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 980 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 98 m short of the threshold. The 1.82 G arrival is the firm side of smooth.
The rest of the report
The Pilatus PC-24 (N971LY) taxied from its parking position to runway 28 at BIKF Keflavik International Airport, a movement that required 9 minutes and covered 7 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 28, the aircraft used 824 m of runway, representing 27 % of the available length, and lifted off at 129 kt. Ambient conditions were 13 °C with a wind from 229° at 16 kt, including a 10 kt cross-component and a 12 kt headwind.
Climb commenced overhead BIKF, ascending from 1,124 ft asl to 12,625 ft asl, a gain of 11,502 ft achieved in 4 minutes while traversing 19 nm.
Cruise began 3 mi south-west of Þorlákshöfn and continued for 8 minutes, during which the aircraft covered 34 nm at level flight.
The first en-route descent started 1 mi south-west of Vogar, descending from 12,609 ft asl to 3,085 ft asl, a loss of 9,524 ft in 5 minutes over 27 nm.
A second descent segment began 2 mi south-east of Hveragerði, dropping from 2,811 ft asl to 585 ft asl, a reduction of 2,226 ft in 3 minutes while covering 8 nm.
Final approach to runway 14 at BISF Selfoss Airport was executed from the north-west, on a heading of 128.0° at 3 nm and 536 ft agl. Weather was 12 °C with a wind from 200° at 10 kt, comprising a 9 kt crosswind and a 3 kt headwind.
Touchdown occurred before the threshold at a speed of 121 kt and a vertical rate of minus 228 fpm. The aircraft was laterally offset by 4.2 m from the centreline at touchdown; the total landing roll measured 660 m, equivalent to 67 % of the runway length.
Rollout alignment was noted to be 15.3 m off the centreline before the aircraft exited the runway.
In total, the flight covered 100 nm, required 29 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 298 kg of fuel.
The Pilatus PC-24 N971LY established a final approach to runway 14 at BISF Selfoss Airport from the north-west, tracking a heading of 128.0° at 3 nm and 536 ft agl while the ambient temperature was 12 °C and the wind was 10 kt from 200°, providing a 9 kt cross-wind component and a 3 kt head-wind component.
The aircraft crossed the runway threshold early and commenced the flare, resulting in touchdown before the threshold.
Touchdown occurred at 121 kt, which the data describes as good, with a vertical rate of minus 228 fpm rated as fair. The touchdown point was slightly misaligned by 4.2 m from the centreline and the total landing distance measured 660 m, representing 67 % of the runway length.
During rollout the aircraft remained misaligned, deviating 15.3 m from the centreline.
With a score of 82.0 % the landing was solid, but lateral alignment should be tightened; aim to keep touchdown offset within a couple of metres of centreline and maintain runway centreline tracking during rollout to reduce the 15-metre deviation.
