Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,310 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 529 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna Longitude, then departed from runway 04 at Geneva Cointrin International Airport (LSGG). The takeoff distance was 597 meters, which accounted for 17% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 130 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 3°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at a direction of 50°. This resulted in a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 2 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb overhead Le Grand-Saconnex, a location in Geneva, Switzerland. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 2,390 feet above sea level to 40,439 feet above sea level, an increase of 38,049 feet, in 12 minutes and covering a distance of 48 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 1 mile north of Charvieu-Chavagneux, a location in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region of France. This phase of the flight lasted 39 minutes and covered a distance of 314 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 1 mile southwest of Isaba, a location in the Navarra region of Spain. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 40,484 feet above sea level to 1,370 feet above sea level, a decrease of 39,114 feet, in 24 minutes and covering a distance of 127 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 29 at Seve Ballesteros-Santander Airport (LEXJ) was made from the east, with a heading of 289.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,352 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 29, which had a length of 2,310 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 111 knots.
The touchdown point was 100 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 99 knots and a smooth touchdown rate of -139 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.3 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 2°C, with a wind speed of 0 knots at a direction of 250°. This resulted in a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 0 knots.
The total landing distance was 997 meters, which accounted for 43% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 495 nautical miles, which was covered in 85 minutes, and the aircraft used 1,207 kilograms of fuel.
The Cessna Longitude successfully landed at Seve Ballesteros-Santander Airport, achieving a high score of 99.0%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 289.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,352 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, and the aircraft touched down on runway 29, which has a length of 2,310 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 111 knots. However, the touchdown speed of 99 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown rate of -139 feet per minute (fpm) was also smooth, demonstrating the pilot's skill in managing the aircraft's descent.
The touchdown point was located 100 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.3 meters from the centerline, but this did not appear to have any significant impact on the landing. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 2°C and a wind speed of 0 knots from 250°. There was no crosswind or headwind to contend with, making the landing even more straightforward.
The total landing distance of 997 meters was 43% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly and efficiently. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, and the pilot's skills were evident throughout the process. The Cessna Longitude's performance was impressive, and the high score of 99.0% reflects the pilot's expertise and the aircraft's capabilities.
