Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 305 m and 152 m above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,690 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,690 m of the 3,509 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 404 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 23 at Comiso Airport (LICB), located in Sicilia, Italy. The takeoff distance was 1,406 meters, which accounted for 59% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 153 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Comiso Airport, it encountered local weather conditions of 27°C temperature and a wind speed of 7 knots at 270°. The crosswind was 5 knots, while the headwind was 6 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile southwest of the airport and continued for 20 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 505 meters above sea level to 10,650 meters above sea level, covering a distance of 127 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 10 miles northeast of Ustica, Sicilia, Italy. This phase lasted for 45 minutes and covered a distance of 316 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, which started 21 miles west of Livorno, Toscana, Italy. The descent from 10,628 meters above sea level to 10,096 meters above sea level took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 8 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 22 miles west of Marina di Pisa, Toscana, Italy. This phase lasted for 62 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began its descent once again, which started 23 miles west of Marina di Pisa. The descent from 10,051 meters above sea level to 1,264 meters above sea level took 21 minutes and covered a distance of 107 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 1 mile southwest of Gambolo, Lombardia, Italy. This phase lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, which started overhead Cassolnovo, Lombardia, Italy. The descent from 1,222 meters above sea level to 616 meters above sea level took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 12 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 35L at Milan Malpensa International Airport (LIMC) was made from the south, heading 350° at 4 nautical miles and 390.9 meters above ground level. The landing on runway 35L was successful, with a touchdown distance of 406 meters and a touchdown speed of 143 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown rate was good at -0.9 meters per second, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 19°C temperature and a wind speed of 2 knots at 270°, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 0 knots. The total landing distance was 1,616 meters, which accounted for 46% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 583 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 1 hour and 47 minutes. The aircraft used 4,674 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Milan Malpensa International Airport (LIMC) on runway 35L. The final approach was conducted from the south, heading 350.0° at an altitude of 390.9 meters above ground level (agl) and 4 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft maintained a good alignment with the runway during the approach, resulting in a very good runway touchdown alignment.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was slightly above the target threshold speed at 149 knots, which may have contributed to a slightly fast touchdown speed of 143 knots. However, the touchdown distance of 406 meters was considered good, indicating that the aircraft's descent was well-controlled. The touchdown rate of -0.9 meters per second was also within acceptable limits.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 19°C and a light wind of 2 knots from 270°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a headwind of 0 knots, making the landing conditions ideal. The total landing distance of 1,616 meters was 46% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively, allowing the aircraft to come to a stop within a short distance. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft demonstrating good control and precision throughout the approach and touchdown phases.
