Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,519 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,519 m of the 3,582 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 985 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 777-300 taxied from the parking area to the departure runway for 21 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nm.
The aircraft commenced its departure roll on runway 26L at CYVR Vancouver International Airport, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 191 kt. The takeoff run measured 2,046 m, representing 59 % of the available runway. Ambient conditions were 24 °C with a wind of 6 kt from 230°, including a 4 kt cross-wind component and a 4 kt head-wind component.
Climb began one mile west of CYVR, with the airplane ascending from 1,015 ft asl to 30,122 ft asl, a gain of 29,107 ft achieved in 16 minutes while covering 98 nm.
The first cruise segment started 11 nm north-east of Tofino and lasted 47 minutes, during which the aircraft flew 353 nm at level altitude.
A subsequent climb was initiated at latitude 48.6475775, longitude -134.6503203, raising the aircraft from 29,884 ft asl to 31,832 ft asl, an increase of 1,948 ft in 2 minutes over a distance of 12 nm.
The next cruise phase began at latitude 48.614326, longitude -134.9896245 and continued for 550 minutes, covering 4,256 nm at cruise altitude.
A further climb started at latitude 25.7182178, longitude 136.9274103, taking the airplane from 33,717 ft asl to 39,571 ft asl, a rise of 5,854 ft in 5 minutes while traversing 41 nm.
The following cruise segment commenced at latitude 25.2614178, longitude 136.3367222, lasting 129 minutes and encompassing 1,011 nm.
Descent began 19 nm north of Patnanungan, Calabarzon, Philippines, with the aircraft descending from 39,576 ft asl to 1,295 ft asl, a loss of 38,281 ft in 23 minutes and covering 122 nm.
The final approach to runway 24 at RPLL Ninoy Aquino International Airport was flown from the north-east, on a heading of 240.0° at 4 nm and 1,236 ft agl.
A go-around was executed on runway 24 at RPLL when the aircraft reached 82 ft agl, aborting the initial landing attempt.
Landing on runway 24 at RPLL was performed on a runway 3,582 m long. The threshold height was 72 ft agl, above the target, and the threshold speed was slightly above target at 148 kt. Touchdown occurred 577 m beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 138 kt, a rate of -226 fpm, and a lateral deviation of 7.8 m from the centreline. Local weather reported a temperature of 27 °C. Total landing distance was 2,447 m, representing 68 % of the runway.
During rollout the aircraft’s alignment remained slightly off centreline by 7.7 m.
The airplane taxied from the runway to the parking area in 4 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
Overall, the flight covered 5,983 nm, required 815 minutes of elapsed time, and consumed 113,882 kg of fuel.
The final approach to runway 24 at RPLL was flown from the north-east on a heading of 240.0° at 4 nm and 1,236 ft agl, maintaining the prescribed glide path into the 3,586 m runway.
At the threshold the aircraft was 72 ft agl, which was well above the target height, and the threshold speed was 148 kt, slightly above the target, indicating a marginally high energy state before flare.
Touchdown occurred 577 m beyond the designated touchdown zone with a speed of 138 kt, a little fast, and a vertical rate of minus 226 fpm; the touchdown point was offset 7.3 m from the centreline.
The rollout covered a total distance of 2,447 m, representing 68 % of the runway length, and the runway alignment during rollout was very good.
To improve the score, aim to achieve touchdown within the touchdown zone and reduce the approach speed to bring the touchdown speed closer to target, which will also help limit the landing distance and lateral deviation.
