Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,582 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 414 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 10R at KFLL Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,312 meters, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 156 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it started its enroute climb 1 mile north east of Dania Beach, Florida. The climb was from 978 feet above sea level to 39,019 feet above sea level, an increase of 38,041 feet in 43 minutes, covering a distance of 341 nautical miles. The local weather at the time of takeoff was a temperature of 23 degrees Celsius.
The enroute level cruise started at a latitude of 28.8016822 and a longitude of -74.547105, and lasted for 250 minutes, covering a distance of 2,194 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 65 miles south west of Lajes das Flores in the Azores, Portugal. The descent was from 39,002 feet above sea level to 3,092 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,910 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 168 nautical miles.
The aircraft then leveled off 1 mile north of Sao Roque do Pico in the Azores, Portugal, and remained at this altitude for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The enroute descent then started 5 miles north east of Sao Roque do Pico, and the aircraft descended from 3,003 feet above sea level to 1,394 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,608 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 27 at LPPI Pico Airport was from the east, with a heading of 263.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,274 feet above ground level. The landing was on runway 27, which had a length of 1,582 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 136 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 416 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 126 knots. The touchdown rate was smooth at -131 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather at the time of landing was a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius, with a wind of 10 knots at 191 degrees. The crosswind was 9 knots, and the headwind was 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 829 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 2,722 nautical miles, taking 327 minutes, and the aircraft used 14,053 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LPPI Pico Airport, achieving a high score of 98.9%. The final approach to runway 27 was conducted from the east, with a heading of 263.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,274 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 136 knots, which was slightly above the target threshold speed. However, the touchdown distance of 416 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 126 knots was a little fast, but the touchdown rate of -131 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, suggesting a well-executed landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 191°. The crosswind component was 9 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots. These conditions did not appear to have a significant impact on the landing.
The total landing distance of 829 meters was 52% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the aircraft was well under control during the landing and rollout phases.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and precision during the approach, touchdown, and rollout phases.
