Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,208 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,208 m of the 2,996 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 554 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 11 at SBIL Bahia - Jorge Amado Airport. The takeoff distance was 974 meters, which accounted for 66% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 144 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 110 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile south east of Ilheus, climbing from an altitude of 1,036 feet above sea level to 33,903 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,867 feet in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 103 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 16 miles west of SNHQ Nacional de Grafite III Airport Salto Da Divisa, and lasted for 65 minutes, covering a distance of 446 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 4 miles north of Eloi Mendes, descending from 33,768 feet above sea level to 3,686 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,082 feet in 25 minutes, covering a distance of 121 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 28L at SBGR André Franco Montoro International Airport was made from the east, heading 253.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,228 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 28L, which had a length of 2,996 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 151 knots. The touchdown point was 161 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 146 knots, which was fast. However, the touchdown rate was smooth at -115 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.5 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance was 2,151 meters, which accounted for 72% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 677 nautical miles, taking 118 minutes, and the aircraft used 4,700 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at SBGR André Franco Montoro International Airport, with a score of 97.9%. The final approach to runway 28L was initiated from the east, heading 253.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,228 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with the threshold height being satisfactory. However, the threshold speed was above the target speed, registering at 151 knots. The touchdown point was located 161 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot.
The touchdown speed of 146 knots was faster than the desired speed, which may have contributed to the slight deviation from the touchdown zone. Nevertheless, the touchdown rate was smooth, with a descent rate of -115 feet per minute (fpm). The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 4.5 meters, which may require some adjustments during future landings.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C. The total landing distance of 2,151 meters was 72% of the available runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was well under control during the landing roll.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down safely on the runway. However, there were some minor deviations from the intended landing spot and speed, which may require some adjustments during future landings.
