Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 9,815 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 614 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 07C at Hong Kong International Airport (VHHH). The takeoff distance was 4,204 feet, which accounted for 37% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 160 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 71 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 89 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 4 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northeast of the airport and ascending from an altitude of 1,082 feet above sea level to 38,384 feet above sea level, an increase of 37,302 feet in 24 minutes, covering a distance of 160 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 61 miles north of Pratas Island and lasted for 113 minutes, covering a distance of 1,704 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 11 miles northwest of Mutsu, Japan, and descending from an altitude of 35,457 feet above sea level to 1,363 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,094 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 90 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 19R at New Chitose Airport (RJCC) was made from the north, heading 173.0 degrees at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,284 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 19R was successful, with a touchdown distance of 615 feet, which was 21% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was 122 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -230 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 12 feet from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 45 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 13 knots from a direction of 160 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 13 knots. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,964 nautical miles, taking 176 minutes, and the aircraft used 22,692 pounds of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at RJCC New Chitose Airport, with a final approach score of 98.2%. The aircraft was approaching runway 19R from the north, heading 173.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,284 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a crucial aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was recorded at 128 knots, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance was also good, measuring 615 feet, and the touchdown speed was 122 knots, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate was fair, at -230 feet per minute (fpm), which may indicate a slightly steeper descent than ideal.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 12 feet from the centreline, which may require some adjustments to the pilot's approach and landing technique. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were moderate, with a temperature of 45°F and a wind speed of 13 knots at 160°. The crosswind component was minimal, at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 13 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly steeper descent.
The total landing distance was 2,094 feet, which is 21% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain a good approach and landing speed. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the pilot demonstrating good control and technique. However, there are some areas for improvement, such as the slightly steeper descent and the misaligned touchdown position. With some adjustments to the approach and landing technique, the pilot can aim to achieve an even higher score in the future.
