Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,301 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,301 m of the 3,082 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 531 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight departed from London Gatwick Airport, where it rolled out onto runway 26L and began its takeoff roll. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 160 kt, covering a distance of 1,322 m, which represented 53% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 17 °C and a wind of 21 kt at 170°, resulting in a crosswind component of 21 kt and a headwind component of 1 kt.
As the aircraft climbed to cruising altitude, it passed through several enroute climb phases, with the most significant increase in altitude occurring from 1,197 ft asl to 33,592 ft asl, a rise of 32,395 ft in 17 minutes. The aircraft then entered a prolonged level cruise phase, lasting 240 minutes and covering 932 nm. This was followed by a series of short climb and level cruise phases, with the final level cruise phase lasting 95 minutes and covering 1,214 nm. The aircraft then began its descent, initially from 35,392 ft asl to 20,500 ft asl, a decrease of 14,892 ft in 16 minutes. The final approach to runway 23 at Halifax / Stanfield International Airport was made from the north east, with a heading of 215.0° at 4 nm and 1,337 ft agl.
The aircraft landed on runway 23, with a touchdown point 116 m beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 131 kt, and the touchdown rate was firm at -355 fpm. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was also satisfactory. The total landing distance was 2,221 m, representing 72% of the runway length. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, covering a distance of less than 1 nm in 2 minutes. The total flight distance was 2,492 nm, and the flight duration was 249 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 9,440 kg.
The aircraft touched down on runway 23 at CYHZ Halifax / Stanfield International Airport, demonstrating a good threshold height and speed of 137 kt. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a heading of 215.0° from the north east at 4 nm and 1,337 ft above ground level. The touchdown point was 116 m beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 131 kt, which was within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate was firm at -355 fpm, indicating a controlled descent.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, with the aircraft maintaining its centerline alignment throughout the rollout phase. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 12 °C and wind speeds of 8 kt at 350°, resulted in a crosswind of 5 kt and a tailwind of 5 kt. The aircraft's performance was not significantly affected by these conditions. The total landing distance of 2,221 m was 72% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance.
The rollout phase was also executed well, with the aircraft maintaining a very good centerline alignment. The overall performance of the aircraft was satisfactory, with a score of 95.7%. The crew's ability to manage the approach and landing phases effectively was demonstrated by the good threshold height, speed, and touchdown characteristics. The aircraft's handling and control during the rollout phase were also noteworthy, contributing to the high score.
