Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,672 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 576 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 27 at CYZW Teslin Airport, a small airport located in the Yukon, Canada. The TBM 850 aircraft took off with a takeoff distance of 594 meters, which is 40% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 98 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 0°C, a wind speed of 3 knots at 274°, resulting in a 1-knot crosswind and a 3-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed out of CYZW Teslin Airport, it began to ascend from an initial altitude of 3,067 feet above sea level to 5,353 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,286 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. This initial climb phase was followed by a level cruise, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb phase, this time from 4,513 feet above sea level to 5,416 feet above sea level, an increase of 904 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The flight continued with a series of level cruises and climb phases, with the aircraft reaching an altitude of 6,450 feet above sea level. The climb phase from 5,148 feet above sea level to 6,450 feet above sea level was the most significant, with an increase of 1,301 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began a level cruise, which lasted for 10 minutes and covered 40 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began a descent from 6,558 feet above sea level to 3,713 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,845 feet in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 29 nautical miles. The descent phase was followed by a level cruise, which lasted for 3 minutes and covered 11 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 09 at CYQH Watson Lake Airport was made from the west, with the aircraft heading 107.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,271 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 09, which has a length of 1,672 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was too high at 81 knots. The touchdown point was 141 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 75 knots, which was fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -219 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.4 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -9°C, a wind speed of 6 knots at 60°, resulting in a 5-knot crosswind and a 4-knot headwind. The total landing distance was 808 meters, which is 48% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the taxiing to the parking from the runway took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
Overall, the flight was 118 nautical miles long and took 36 minutes to complete, using a total of -110 kilograms of fuel.
The TBM 850 aircraft successfully landed at CYQH Watson Lake Airport, achieving a score of 95.2%. The final approach was conducted from the west, heading 107.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,271 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 09, which has a length of 1,672 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was too high at 81 knots. This indicates that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft more effectively to reduce the touchdown speed. The touchdown point was 141 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which suggests that the pilot may have been able to make a more precise touchdown. However, the touchdown speed of 75 knots was still relatively fast, and the touchdown rate of -219 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.4 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach or during the flare. The local weather conditions were cold, with a temperature of -9°C, and a moderate wind of 6 knots at 60°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots.
The total landing distance of 808 meters was 48% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly and efficiently. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some areas for improvement, such as reducing the threshold speed and touchdown speed, and making a more precise touchdown.
