Improve the pattern base leg turn
Bank angle in the pattern is conventionally kept to 20 to 30 degrees, and the base-to-final turn is where that convention earns its keep. Stall speed rises with bank because the wing must produce more lift in a turn. Roughly 7 per cent higher at 30 degrees, about 19 per cent at 45, and around 40 per cent at 60. At 65 kt on base you don't have much margin to spend steepening a turn to salvage an overshoot.

One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: six checks at the point nearest 500 ft above the runway after the base turn. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,099 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,099 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 269 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 03R at EDCM Kamenz Airfield, where the DA40-XLS aircraft took off with a takeoff distance of 99 meters, which accounted for 9% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 58 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 222 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 0 knots and a tailwind of 3 knots.
As the aircraft entered the right-hand pattern, it did so from runway 03R, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile in 14 seconds. The right-hand pattern crosswind was also from runway 03R, and the aircraft took 25 seconds to cover a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The pattern downwind turn was completed with a distance of 1 nautical mile, and the angle to the runway was 70.8 degrees. The downwind leg itself was covered in 21 seconds, with a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The base leg turn was also completed with a distance of 1 nautical mile, and the angle to the runway was 76.5 degrees. The base leg itself took 30 seconds to cover a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The final turn was completed in 27 seconds, with a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The final approach to runway 03R was made from the southwest, with a heading of 33.0 degrees at an altitude of 118 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 03R was successful, with a touchdown distance of 266 meters, which was good. The touchdown speed was 45 knots, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -110 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions remained the same. The total landing distance was 695 meters, which accounted for 63% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The total flight distance was 5 nautical miles, which was covered in 4 minutes, and the aircraft used 31 kilograms of fuel during the flight. Overall, the flight was characterized by smooth and controlled movements, with good touchdown and rollout alignment.
The DA40-XLS aircraft successfully landed at EDCM Kamenz Airfield, achieving a score of 99.6%. The final approach was conducted from the southwest, heading 33.0° at 0 nm and 118 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft landed on runway 03R, which has a length of 1,099 m.
The pilot demonstrated good control during the approach, with a threshold height that was satisfactory. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 62 kt, indicating a minor deviation from the ideal approach speed. Despite this, the touchdown distance was good at 266 m, and the touchdown speed of 45 kt was within acceptable limits.
The touchdown rate was smooth at -110 fpm, indicating a controlled descent and minimal impact on the aircraft's landing gear. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to accurately align the aircraft with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20 °C and a wind speed of 3 kt at 222°. The crosswind component was negligible at 0 kt, while the tailwind component was 3 kt. These conditions contributed to a smooth and controlled landing.
The total landing distance was 695 m, which represents 63% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating the pilot's skill and control during the approach and landing phases. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control and alignment during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the pilot demonstrating good control and adherence to standard operating procedures. The score of 99.6% reflects the high level of proficiency and skill displayed during the landing.
