Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,983 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 364 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an RJ100, then departed from runway 08R at Vancouver International Airport (CYVR). The takeoff distance was 1,104 meters, which accounted for 34% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 137 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 9 degrees Celsius and winds of 10 knots at 156 degrees. The crosswind was 8 knots, while the headwind was 5 knots. The enroute climb started overhead the Vancouver International Seaplane Base (CAM9), where the aircraft climbed from 1,064 feet above sea level to 15,970 feet above sea level, an increase of 14,906 feet in 9 minutes and covering a distance of 27 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 8 miles south of Sechelt, British Columbia, and lasted for 5 minutes, covering a distance of 31 nautical miles. The enroute descent started 5 miles south of Texada Gillies Bay Airport (CYGB), where the aircraft descended from 15,922 feet above sea level to 1,634 feet above sea level, a decrease of 14,288 feet in 14 minutes and covering a distance of 40 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 12 at Campbell River Airport (CYBL) was made from the northwest, heading 135.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,296 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 12 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 366 meters, which was 48% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was 117 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -278 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.3 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions during the landing were a temperature of 3 degrees Celsius and winds of 2 knots at 150 degrees, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the taxiing to the parking from the runway took only 1 minute, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 105 nautical miles, taking 39 minutes, and the aircraft used 1,197 kilograms of fuel.
The RJ100 aircraft successfully landed at CYBL Campbell River Airport, achieving a high score of 97.9%. The final approach was conducted from the northwest, heading 135.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,296 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated good control and precision during the approach, ultimately landing on runway 12.
The runway length at CYBL Campbell River Airport is 1,983 meters, providing a safe margin for the RJ100's landing. The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed of 125 knots was also within acceptable limits. The touchdown distance of 366 meters was good, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down effectively before touching down on the runway.
The touchdown speed of 117 knots was also good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control and managed the aircraft's descent smoothly. However, the touchdown rate of -278 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, indicating that the aircraft may have experienced a slightly higher-than-desired rate of descent during the final stages of the approach.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.3 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a minor deviation in the pilot's alignment or a slight crosswind effect. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 3°C and a wind speed of 2 knots at 150°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 2 knots.
The total landing distance of 952 meters was 48% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control and aligned the aircraft with the runway centerline during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good skills and control throughout the approach and landing phases.
