Fixing the bounce
Not the biggest loss in points — the one thing on this flight a check pilot would raise first, and the guide passage for it.
Fast at the threshold, normal flare, and the runway seems to refuse the aircraft. The instinctive fix - pushing it on - causes the next one. A fast aircraft forced onto the runway touches nosewheel-first or nearly so. The tell is a touchdown that feels soft followed by a bounce that steepens. Pilots fix the bounce recovery; the cause was the 10 knots at the threshold.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,111 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,111 ft of the 8,373 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,937 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 737-900ER taxied from the parking area to runway 27R at KATL, a movement that lasted 13 minutes and covered 2 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 27R the aircraft accelerated through a takeoff distance of 5,430 ft, representing 46 % of the runway, and became airborne at a liftoff speed of 158 kt. Ambient conditions were 75 °F with a wind of 2 kt from 356°, producing a 2 kt crosswind and no headwind.
Climb commenced overhead KATL, rising from 2,018 ft asl to 37,000 ft asl, a gain of 34,982 ft achieved in 22 minutes while covering 164 nm.
The first level-cruise segment began over Joanna, SC, and lasted 57 minutes, during which the aircraft travelled 457 nm.
Descent started over Cape May Court House, NJ, dropping from 37,001 ft asl to 4,976 ft asl, a loss of 32,025 ft completed in 18 minutes and covering 114 nm.
A brief cruise over North Merrick, NY followed, lasting 2 minutes and spanning 5 nm.
The next descent segment began over Hicksville, NY, descending from 4,861 ft asl to 2,335 ft asl, a decrease of 2,526 ft in 2 minutes and covering 5 nm.
A short cruise over Old Westbury, NY lasted 3 minutes and covered 7 nm.
Final approach to runway 22L at KJFK was flown from the northeast on a heading of 211.0°, intercepting the glide path at 4 nm and 1,309 ft agl.
Touchdown occurred on runway 22L, which is 8,390 ft long, with the threshold situated at 71 ft agl and a threshold speed of 144 kt. The aircraft landed 605 ft beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 138 kt, with a vertical speed of minus 293 fpm, and was laterally offset by 25 ft from the centreline.
Rollout distance measured 4,879 ft, representing 58 % of the runway, and centreline tracking during rollout was offset by 27 ft.
After landing, the Boeing 737-900ER taxied from the runway to the parking area in 6 minutes, travelling 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 761 nm, required 123 minutes, and consumed 12,072 lbs of fuel.
The Boeing 737-900ER conducted the final approach to runway 22L at KJFK from the north east on a heading of 211.0 °, 4 nm out and 1,309 ft agl. The approach was assessed as stabilised at the 1,000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope and centreline all within limits. Local weather was 79 °F with wind 3 kt from 234 °, a 1 kt crosswind component and a 3 kt headwind component.
At threshold the aircraft encountered a height of 71 ft agl, which was well above target, and the threshold speed was good at 144 kt.
Touchdown occurred 605 ft beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 138 kt, which was good, and a touchdown rate that was fair at minus 293 fpm. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 25 ft from the centreline.
The total landing distance was 4,879 ft, representing 58 % of the runway length, and the rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 27 ft from the centreline.
The overshoot of the touchdown zone and the modest centreline deviations suggest focusing on precise flare timing to achieve a touchdown within the designated zone and on tighter lateral tracking during the rollout. Maintaining the already stabilised approach will support these refinements while preserving the overall strong performance reflected by the 84.8 % score.
