Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,757 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 386 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 31 at Jorge Newbery Airpark. The takeoff distance was 1,195 meters, which accounted for 61% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 153 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 7 knots at 300 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it started its enroute climb overhead SB11 Buenos Aires, Argentina. The climb began at an altitude of 1,036 feet above sea level and reached a maximum altitude of 35,486 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,450 feet in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 117 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then started 13 miles northwest of Florida, Uruguay, and lasted for 86 minutes, covering a distance of 699 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 46 miles southeast of Cananeia, Brazil, and involved a descent from 36,328 feet above sea level to 3,882 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,446 feet in 27 minutes, covering a distance of 138 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 17R at Congonhas Airport was made from the northwest, heading 147.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,262 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 17R was successful, with a touchdown distance of 389 meters, which was good, and a touchdown speed of 129 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was excellent at -74 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots at 160 degrees.
The total landing distance was 1,308 meters, which accounted for 74% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking from the runway, which took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 962 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 139 minutes. The aircraft used 5,550 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed on runway 17R at SBSP Congonhas Airport, achieving a perfect score of 100.0%. The final approach was initiated from the northwest, heading 147.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,262 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 136 knots. The touchdown distance was within acceptable limits at 389 meters, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown speed of 129 knots was slightly higher than the ideal speed, which may have been due to various factors such as wind conditions or pilot preference.
Despite the slightly fast touchdown speed, the aircraft's touchdown rate was excellent at -74 feet per minute (fpm), demonstrating a well-controlled and stable approach. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 22°C and a gentle headwind of 4 knots at 160°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, which further contributed to a smooth and stable approach.
The total landing distance of 1,308 meters was 74% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft had sufficient stopping distance available. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating that the aircraft was well-controlled and stable during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the aircraft achieving a perfect score and demonstrating excellent control and stability throughout the approach and touchdown phases.
