Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,576 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 424 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 737-600 taxied from the parking area to runway 09 at KMIA Miami International Airport in 2 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 09, the aircraft used a takeoff distance of 1,538 m, representing 43 % of the runway, and lifted off at 137 kt; ambient temperature was 34 °C with wind 10 kt from 147°, a crosswind component of 8 kt and a headwind component of 5 kt.
The climb began overhead KMIA, climbing from 992 ft asl to 40,564 ft asl - an increase of 39,572 ft - in 43 minutes while traversing 328 nm.
Level cruise commenced 9 miles north east of Guaimaro, Provincia de Camagueey, Cuba, and persisted for 82 minutes, covering 614 nm.
Descent was initiated 54 miles north west of Tanki Leendert, Aruba Island, descending from 41,000 ft asl to 1,312 ft asl - a loss of 39,688 ft - in 15 minutes and spanning 116 nm.
The final approach to runway 11 at TNCC Hato International Airport was flown from the west on a heading of 102.0°, intercepting the glide path at 4 nm and 1,267 ft agl.
Landing on runway 11, which is 2,576 m long, occurred with a threshold speed of 126 kt; touchdown was recorded at 423 m down the runway at 115 kt and a vertical speed of minus 103 fpm, with alignment described as perfect. Local weather at the time was 31 °C, wind 6 kt from 80°, a crosswind of 2 kt and a headwind of 6 kt.
The total landing distance measured 783 m, equivalent to 30 % of the runway, and the rollout alignment was noted as very good.
After exiting the runway, the aircraft taxied to the parking area in 1 minute, covering less than 1 nm.
Overall, the flight covered 1,063 nm, took 139 minutes, and consumed 6,036 kg of fuel.
The Boeing 737-600 established a final approach to runway 11 at TNCC Hato International Airport from the west, tracking a heading of 102.0° at 4 nm and 1,267 ft agl while the ambient temperature was 31 °C, wind 6 kt from 80°, with a 2 kt cross-wind component and a 6 kt head-wind.
The threshold height was good and the aircraft crossed the threshold at a speed slightly above target, recorded at 126 kt.
Touchdown occurred 423 m down the runway, a distance described as good, with a speed of 115 kt noted as a little fast; the descent rate was smooth at minus 103 fpm and runway-touchdown alignment was perfect.
The total landing distance measured 783 m, representing 30 % of the 2,576 m runway, and rollout alignment was very good.
To tighten the already excellent performance, reduce the threshold and touchdown speeds slightly to bring them within target values, which will further optimise runway usage and margin.
