Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,753 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 552 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The aircraft departed Leeds Bradford Airport (EGNM) on runway 32, applying a take-off roll of 574 m which represented 29 % of the available runway. Liftoff was achieved at 90 kt. Ambient conditions were 14 °C with a wind of 35 kt from 238°, producing a 34 kt cross-wind component and a 6 kt head-wind component.
Climb commenced over Yeadon, lifting the airplane from 2,246 ft asl to 8,000 ft asl - an altitude gain of 5,754 ft - in 6 minutes while covering 19 nm.
The first cruise segment began over Nelson, maintaining level flight for 21 minutes and traversing 90 nm.
Descent was initiated above Cropwell Bishop, reducing altitude from 8,000 ft asl to 3,371 ft asl - a loss of 4,629 ft - in 6 minutes and spanning 20 nm.
A second level cruise started over Willoughby on the Wolds, lasting 6 minutes and covering 6 nm.
For the final approach the aircraft was aligned with runway 27 at East Midlands Airport (EGNX), approaching from the east on a heading of 268.0° at 4 nm and 1,275 ft agl.
Landing on runway 27 was performed on a 2,758 m runway; the threshold height of 57 ft agl was slightly above target and the threshold speed was recorded at 87 kt. Touchdown occurred 148 m beyond the touchdown zone at 83 kt with a vertical speed of minus 66 fpm, and runway-touchdown alignment was perfect. Local weather remained 14 °C with a wind of 35 kt from 238°, yielding an 18 kt cross-wind and a 30 kt head-wind. The total landing distance measured 663 m, representing 24 % of the runway.
Runway rollout alignment was perfect as the aircraft decelerated to a stop.
In total the flight covered 139 nm, taking 44 and consuming 82 kg of fuel.
The TBM 930 established a final approach to runway 27 at EGNX East Midlands Airport from the east, tracking a heading of 268.0° at 4 nm and 1 275 ft agl. The local weather was 14 °C with wind 35 kt from 238°, providing a 30 kt headwind and an 18 kt crosswind component.
At the threshold, the height of 57 ft agl was recorded as slightly above target, while the threshold speed of 87 kt was judged good.
Touchdown occurred 148 m beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 83 kt, noted as a little fast, and a vertical rate of minus 66 fpm, described as excellent. Runway touchdown alignment was perfect and the total landing distance measured 663 m, representing 24 % of the runway.
Runway rollout alignment remained perfect throughout the deceleration phase.
Refine the flare to achieve a touchdown point nearer the intended aim point and adjust the final approach speed to match the target VREF, which will bring the touchdown location and speed into tighter alignment with the optimum parameters.
