Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,003 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 131 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 05 at FAKN Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,270 meters, which accounted for 49% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 146 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 23°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 143°.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile north east of FAKN Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, rising from 3,706 feet above sea level to 36,136 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,430 feet in 24 minutes, covering a distance of 160 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise began 8 miles south east of Vrede, lasting 14 minutes and covering 96 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 12 miles south east of FASN Senekal Airport, descending from 36,231 feet above sea level to 11,983 feet above sea level, a decrease of 24,248 feet in 11 minutes, covering 78 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed 8 miles south west of Nako, lasting 2 minutes and covering 9 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 13 miles south west of Nako, descending from 11,945 feet above sea level to 7,042 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,903 feet in 3 minutes, covering 10 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 04 at FXMM Moshoeshoe I International Airport was from the south, with a heading of 16.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,675 feet above ground level.
However, the aircraft performed a go-around at FXMM Moshoeshoe I International Airport at 0 feet above ground level. The landing was eventually made on runway 04, with a runway length of 3,003 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 135 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 130 meters, and the touchdown speed was 134 knots, which was also good. However, the touchdown rate was hard at -444 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 8.7 meters from the centreline, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 14°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 22°. The crosswind was 0 knots, and the headwind was 2 knots. The total landing distance was 1,172 meters, which accounted for 39% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.8 meters from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 368 nautical miles, taking 69 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,779 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at FXMM Moshoeshoe I International Airport, with a final approach score of 93.7%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the south, heading 16.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,675 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was executed on runway 04, which has a length of 3,003 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway threshold. The threshold speed, which is the speed at which the aircraft should be flying as it touches down on the runway, was slightly below the target speed of 139 knots, coming in at 135 knots. This suggests that the pilot may have been slightly cautious in their approach, but still managed to achieve a good landing.
The touchdown distance, which is the distance between the point where the aircraft touches down on the runway and the point where it comes to a stop, was reported as good at 130 meters. The touchdown speed, which is the speed at which the aircraft touches down on the runway, was also good at 134 knots. However, the touchdown rate, which is the rate at which the aircraft is descending as it touches down on the runway, was reported as hard at -444 feet per minute (fpm). This suggests that the aircraft may have been descending at a slightly steeper angle than intended.
One area for improvement was the runway touchdown position, which was misaligned by 8.7 meters from the centerline of the runway. This suggests that the pilot may have been slightly off-center as they touched down on the runway. Additionally, the runway rollout alignment, which is the alignment of the aircraft as it comes to a stop on the runway, was also slightly misaligned by 8.8 meters from the centerline of the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were reported as follows: the temperature was 14°C, the wind was 2 knots at 22°, and there was no crosswind or headwind. The total landing distance, which is the distance between the point where the aircraft touches down on the runway and the point where it comes to a stop, was 1,172 meters, which is 39% of the length of the runway. Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some areas for improvement in terms of alignment and touchdown rate.
