Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (FAKN/MQP) lies in Mpumalanga province, South Africa, and serves as the principal air gateway to the Kruger National Park and the wider Lowveld region. It offers a single long, hard-surfaced runway with an ILS approach, making it a straightforward destination for both airline traffic and visiting light aircraft flying in the region.

Overview

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, known by its ICAO code FAKN and IATA code MQP, is a public airport near Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit) in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Operated by Primkop Airport Management (Pty) Ltd, it opened in 2002 and serves as the main hub for tourists heading to the Kruger National Park, the Blyde River Canyon and other attractions of the Lowveld. It acts as a base for Airlink and Federal Air, and is served by several regional and domestic carriers, giving it a level of activity and infrastructure that makes it a useful and interesting stop for a simulator pilot exploring southern Africa.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits about 16 kilometres northeast of Mbombela (Nelspruit) as the crow flies, or some 27 kilometres by road, in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. It functions as an international gateway airport for the region, with its role centred on providing access to the Kruger National Park and nearby scenic and heritage attractions rather than serving as a general aviation field.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway aligned 05/23, of hard surface and lit. The database records a length of 9,068 feet for runway 05, which is equipped with an ILS approach, and 10,197 feet for runway 23; the airfield sits at an elevation of 2,825 feet.

Radio & Navigation

The airport is served by an approach and tower frequency of 119.2 MHz, used for both arrivals and tower/approach communications. An ILS approach is available for runway 05.

Visual Reference Points

The terminal building itself is a notable visual landmark, being almost entirely covered by a thatched roof spanning roughly 7,350 square metres, reputedly the largest thatched structure in Africa. The airport lies within the Lowveld region close to the Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon, both prominent geographic features for orientation when approaching from the surrounding bushveld terrain.

History

The airport opened on 21 October 2002, replacing the smaller Nelspruit Airport, and was built to provide dedicated air access for tourism to the Kruger National Park. Its terminal, with its extensive thatched roof, was constructed as a distinctive architectural feature reflecting the region's character.

The Airfield Today

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport is a scheduled hub for Airlink and Federal Air, and is also served by FlySafair, Fastjet Zimbabwe and Air Botswana, connecting it to destinations across South Africa and the wider region, including Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Victoria Falls, Kasane, Livingstone and Vilanculos, as well as Kruger-area airstrips such as Skukuza, Phinda and Timbavati. The airport also has an associated business park and development zone, with ongoing community and infrastructure projects run by the airport operator.
