Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 11,988 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 959 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 146 minutes and covered a distance of 20 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 04 at KHOU William P Hobby Airport in Houston, Texas. The takeoff distance was 3,320 feet, which accounted for 44% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 81°F, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 80°.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it began its enroute climb from 1,084 feet above sea level to 39,108 feet above sea level, an increase of 38,024 feet in just 18 minutes. This climb covered a distance of 121 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 6 miles southwest of the LA12 Louisiana State Police Troop B Helipad Heliport in Kenner, Louisiana, and lasted for 34 minutes, covering a distance of 256 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 2 miles west of Prichard, Alabama, and involved a descent from 39,167 feet above sea level to 4,843 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,324 feet in 18 minutes. This descent covered a distance of 101 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, this time starting 3 miles west of Freeport, Florida, and lasting for just 5 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile.
The enroute descent from 4,643 feet above sea level to 3,436 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,207 feet in just 2 minutes, covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, starting overhead KSES Seaside Airport in Seaside, Florida, and lasting for 2 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles.
The final enroute descent began 4 miles east of Miramar Beach, Florida, and involved a descent from 3,010 feet above sea level to 1,148 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,862 feet in 5 minutes. This descent covered a distance of 11 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 30 at KVPS Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, approaching from the southeast at a heading of 300.0°. The aircraft was at an altitude of 1,046 feet above ground level and 4 nautical miles from the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 75°F, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 50°.
The aircraft landed on runway 30, which had a length of 11,988 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed at 130 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 967 feet, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 127 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -340 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The total landing distance was 3,839 feet, which accounted for 32% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the aircraft taxied to the parking from the runway in just 4 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 527 nautical miles, and the flight used 7,336 pounds of fuel.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, with a final approach score of 98.0%. The aircraft was approaching runway 30 from the southeast, heading 300.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,046 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 127 knots, which was slightly above the target threshold speed of 130 knots. However, the touchdown distance of 967 feet was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown rate of -340 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting a stable and controlled landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 75°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 50°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind and tailwind component, making the landing conditions ideal. The runway length of 11,988 feet provided ample space for the aircraft to land and roll out safely.
The total landing distance of 3,839 feet was 32% of the runway length, indicating a controlled and efficient landing. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively, allowing the aircraft to come to a stop without any issues.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down smoothly and coming to a stop safely. The high score of 98.0% reflects the pilot's skill and expertise in navigating the aircraft to a safe and controlled landing.
