Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,771 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 211 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 03 at Dunedin International Airport (NZDN). The takeoff distance was 1,205 meters, which accounted for 64% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 143 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 5 knots at 306°. The crosswind was 5 knots, while the tailwind was 2 knots. After departing from Dunedin, the aircraft began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northeast of the airport and rising from 1,011 feet above sea level to 22,304 feet above sea level. This climb covered a distance of 32 nautical miles and took 12 minutes, with an increase of 21,293 feet in altitude.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 11 miles southeast of Roxburgh and lasted for 6 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 42 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 2 miles west of Kingston, where the aircraft descended from 21,696 feet above sea level to 1,465 feet above sea level. This descent covered a distance of 18 nautical miles and took 14 minutes, with a decrease of 20,231 feet in altitude.
As the aircraft approached Queenstown International Airport (NZQN), it began its final approach to runway 05 from the west, heading 79.0° at 1 nautical mile and 259 feet above ground level. The landing was executed on runway 05, which had a length of 1,771 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 143 knots. The touchdown distance was 212 meters, which was within acceptable limits. However, the touchdown speed of 140 knots was slightly faster than desired.
The touchdown rate was firm at -369 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at Queenstown were characterized by a temperature of 13°C and a wind speed of 2 knots at 170°. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the headwind was 0 knots. The total landing distance was 1,014 meters, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 96 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 47 minutes. The aircraft used 2,247 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at Queenstown International Airport (NZQN) with a score of 97.0%. The final approach was conducted from the west, heading 79.0° at 1 nautical mile and 259 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 05, which has a length of 1,771 meters.
The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. The threshold speed of 143 knots was also satisfactory, demonstrating that the pilot had maintained control and was on track for a smooth landing. The touchdown distance of 212 meters was within acceptable limits, further indicating a well-executed landing.
However, the touchdown speed of 140 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have resulted in a firmer touchdown rate of -369 feet per minute (fpm). Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, showing that the pilot had maintained control and was aligned with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 13°C and a light wind of 2 knots from 170°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a headwind of 0 knots. The total landing distance of 1,014 meters was 57% of the runway length, which is within acceptable limits.
The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot had maintained control and was able to bring the aircraft to a stop in a straight line. Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft coming to a stop safely and efficiently.
