Departure
Use smaller, smoother aileron inputs to hold the climb bank angle near wings-level.
What happened: During Climb 3 the bank angle averaged 4.1°, well beyond a steady wings-level climb.
Watch for: Attitude indicator - bank angle, keeping it close to wings-level through the climb.
Arrival
Begin the flare with progressive back pressure and keep it coming until the sink is arrested, rather than flying it on flat.
What happened: The nose was barely raised in the flare and little of the sink was taken out, flying the aircraft onto the runway. This pattern usually carries through to a firm touchdown with a noticeable sink rate.
Watch for: Vertical speed indicator: a smoothly reducing sink through the normal flare band, not a steady rate into the runway.
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed, off the runway's 3° glideslope, off the centreline, wings not level and speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,112 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 640 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 07C at Hong Kong International Airport (VHHH). The aircraft, an Airbus A320, accelerated down the runway and lifted off at a speed of 153 kt, covering a distance of 358 m, which is 10% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 18 °C and a wind speed of 2 kt from a direction of 270 °, resulting in a slight tailwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 3 miles north east of Tung Chung, a district in Hong Kong. The climb started from an altitude of 927 ft above sea level and reached a height of 1,853 ft, an increase of 926 ft in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nm. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered another 6 nm, starting 3 miles south west of Tsuen Wan, another district in Hong Kong.
The final approach to runway 13 at Hong Kong International Airport Kai Tak (VHHX) was initiated from the north west, with the aircraft heading towards the runway at a distance of 1 nm and an altitude of 871 ft above ground level. However, the landing was not without its challenges. The threshold height was well above the target, and the threshold speed was too high at 149 kt. The touchdown point was 376 m beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed of 135 kt was faster than desired, resulting in a hard touchdown rate of -485 fpm.
Despite the challenges, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were similar to those at takeoff, with a temperature of 17 °C and a wind speed of 2 kt from a direction of 269 °, resulting in a slight crosswind. The total landing distance was 1,400 m, which is 45% of the runway length. However, the runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 17.9 m from the centreline.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway, covering a distance of less than 1 nm in just 1 minute. The total flight distance was 17 nm, and the flight duration was 6 minutes, during which the aircraft used 183 kg of fuel.
The Airbus A320 aircraft has successfully landed at VHHX Hong Kong International Airport Kai Tak, but with some notable areas for improvement. The final approach was conducted from the north-west, heading 134.0° at 1 nautical mile and 871 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 13, which has a length of 3,112 meters.
However, there were some discrepancies in the landing performance. The threshold height at 78 feet agl was well above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been too high during the approach. Additionally, the threshold speed was too high at 149 knots, which could have contributed to the subsequent issues. The touchdown point was 376 meters beyond the touchdown zone, suggesting that the aircraft may have landed slightly too far down the runway.
The touchdown speed of 135 knots was also faster than desired, and the touchdown rate of -485 feet per minute (fpm) was considered hard. This could have put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and may have affected the overall safety of the landing. On the positive side, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 17°C and winds of 2 knots at 269°. The crosswind and tailwind components were both minimal at 1 knot each. The total landing distance was 1,400 meters, which is 45% of the runway length. However, the runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 17.9 meters from the centreline, which could have been a result of the aircraft's high touchdown speed and hard touchdown rate.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there are several areas that require attention to improve the aircraft's performance and safety. These include reducing the threshold speed, improving the touchdown height and speed, and ensuring proper runway rollout alignment.
