Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,123 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 19 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A320, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Birmingham International Airport, located at EGBB. This process took approximately 8 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 33, with a takeoff distance of 1,588 meters, which accounted for 69% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 167 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 26°C temperature and a wind speed of 11 knots at 240 degrees. The crosswind was 11 knots, while the headwind was a relatively minor 1 knot. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead the Birmingham International Airport, and rising from an altitude of 1,321 feet above sea level to 34,918 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,597 feet in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 83 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, starting overhead Kings Worthy in Hampshire, England. This phase lasted for 97 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 686 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 5 miles northwest of Parada de Gonta in Portugal, and descending from 36,165 feet above sea level to 8,283 feet above sea level, a decrease of 27,882 feet in 24 minutes, covering a distance of 102 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, starting 3 miles northwest of Vila Verde in Portugal, and lasting for 2 minutes, during which it covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 3 miles southeast of Cadaval in Portugal, and descending from 8,278 feet above sea level to 1,632 feet above sea level, a decrease of 6,645 feet in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 22 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 20 at Lisbon Portela Airport was made from the north, with the aircraft heading at 203.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,274 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 20, which had a length of 3,123 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 135 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 20 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 135 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -293 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 28°C temperature and a wind speed of 11 knots at 230 degrees, with a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 10 knots.
The total landing distance was 694 meters, which accounted for 22% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the aircraft then began taxiing to the parking area, which took approximately 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 907 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 160 minutes, during which the aircraft used 6,092 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at LPPT Humberto Delgado Airport (Lisbon Portela Airport) on runway 20, achieving a high score of 99.2%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 203.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,274 feet above ground level (agl).
The final approach was executed with good control, and the aircraft landed smoothly on the runway. The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed of 135 knots was also within the acceptable range. However, the touchdown speed of 135 knots was slightly higher than the ideal speed, which may have resulted in a slightly higher touchdown rate.
The touchdown rate of -293 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, indicating that the aircraft touched down with a moderate amount of deceleration. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 28°C and a wind speed of 11 knots from 230°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 10 knots. These conditions did not appear to have a significant impact on the landing.
The total landing distance of 694 meters was 22% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the aircraft was able to land smoothly and efficiently, with minimal deceleration. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline throughout the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was executed with good control and precision, resulting in a high score of 99.2%. The aircraft's performance was satisfactory, and the landing was completed safely and efficiently.
