Improve the takeoff
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,396 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,360 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Melbourne International Airport (YMML), the Airbus A320 began its journey down runway 27, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 155 kt after a takeoff distance of 5,678 ft, which covered 76% of the available runway. The aircraft then transitioned into a steady climb, ascending from 1,256 ft above sea level to 36,003 ft in 27 minutes, covering a distance of 191 nm. This enroute climb phase started approximately 1 mile south of Bulla, Victoria, and marked the beginning of the aircraft's ascent into the upper atmosphere.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it entered a level cruise phase, maintaining an altitude of 36,003 ft for 124 minutes while covering a distance of 972 nm. This phase started 17 miles southeast of Hay Airport (YHAY) in New South Wales. The aircraft then began its descent, reducing altitude from 35,939 ft to 19,584 ft in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 39 nm. This initial descent phase started 21 miles northeast of Camel Creek Airport (YCMK) in Queensland. The aircraft then entered a brief level cruise phase, lasting only 2 minutes, before beginning its final descent phase.
The final descent phase started 5 miles southeast of Ravenshoe, Queensland, and saw the aircraft reduce its altitude from 19,005 ft to 1,303 ft in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 69 nm. The aircraft then lined up for a final approach to runway 33 at Cairns International Airport (YBCS), but a go-around was initiated at an altitude of 168 ft above ground level. The aircraft subsequently landed on runway 33, touching down at a speed of 130 kt and a distance of 1,368 ft, which was slightly above the target. The total landing distance was 4,021 ft, covering 39% of the available runway. Following a smooth rollout, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, concluding its journey after covering a total distance of 1,365 nm and using 18,000 lbs of fuel.
The final approach to runway 33 at YBCS Cairns International Airport from the south east was executed with precision, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 336.0° at 4 nm and 1,273 ft above ground level. The approach quality was excellent, with a good threshold height achieved. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 134 kt, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal landing speed.
As the aircraft touched down on the runway, the touchdown distance was good at 1,368 ft, indicating a controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 130 kt was a little fast, which may have contributed to a fair touchdown rate of -266 fpm. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, demonstrating the pilot's skill and control. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 87 °F and a wind of 17 kt at 321°, contributed to a relatively straightforward landing.
The total landing distance of 4,021 ft, which accounted for 39% of the runway length, was within acceptable limits. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, with the aircraft maintaining its centreline alignment throughout the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was executed with a high degree of precision and control, resulting in a score of 99.0%.
