Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 7,410 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 7,410 ft of the 12,102 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,449 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 02C at Singapore Changi Airport (WSSS). The takeoff distance was 7,249 feet, which was 55% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 195 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 180 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a tailwind of 8 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northeast of the airport and ascending from an altitude of 1,074 feet above sea level to 8,063 feet above sea level, an increase of 6,989 feet in just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase began 11 miles southeast of Kota Tinggi, Malaysia, and lasted for 50 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time from 9,034 feet above sea level to 33,219 feet above sea level, an increase of 24,185 feet in 11 minutes, covering a distance of 117 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase resumed 4 miles northeast of Tampin, Malaysia, and lasted for 62 minutes, covering a distance of 1,018 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time from 33,271 feet above sea level to 34,888 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,617 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 24 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase resumed again, this time starting at a location with coordinates 16.4166231 latitude and 91.5972887 longitude, and lasted for 95 minutes, covering a distance of 1,353 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time from 33,999 feet above sea level to 36,097 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,098 feet in 4 minutes, covering a distance of 42 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase resumed once more, this time starting 18 miles west of Jhang Sadr, Pakistan, and lasted for 156 minutes, covering a distance of 1,970 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 12 miles southwest of Sudogda, Russia, and descending from 35,076 feet above sea level to 1,918 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,157 feet in 31 minutes, covering a distance of 111 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 06R at Sheremetyevo International Airport (UUEE) was made from the west, heading 75.0 degrees at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,216 feet above ground level. The landing was made on the runway, which was 12,102 feet long. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 147 knots.
The touchdown point was 2,081 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 133 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -250 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 21 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 290 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 3 knots and a tailwind of 5 knots.
The total landing distance
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at UUEE Sheremetyevo International Airport, with a final approach score of 88.3%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the west, heading 75.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,216 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was executed on runway 06R, which has a length of 12,102 feet.
The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. The threshold speed was also good, at 147 knots, which is the recommended speed for landing. The touchdown point was 2,081 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is slightly further than ideal but still within acceptable limits. The touchdown speed of 133 knots was good, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down smoothly and safely.
However, the touchdown rate of -250 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slightly rougher-than-ideal touchdown. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 21 feet from the centreline, which may have required some corrective action from the pilots.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 16°F and winds of 6 knots at 290°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the tailwind component was 5 knots. Despite these conditions, the aircraft was able to land safely and within the acceptable limits.
The total landing distance was 7,142 feet, which is 59% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down and stop safely within a reasonable distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilots were able to maintain control of the aircraft and align it with the centreline of the runway during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down safely and within the acceptable limits. However, there were some minor issues with the touchdown rate and runway alignment, which may require some attention from the pilots to improve future landings.
