Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,500 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 210 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by an ATR 72 aircraft, departing from SKRG Jose Maria Córdova International Airport in Medellín, Colombia. The aircraft began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. Upon reaching the runway, the aircraft took off from runway 01, with a takeoff distance of 1,684 meters, which accounted for 48% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 120 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of the airport, it encountered local weather conditions of 18°C temperature and a wind speed of 3 knots at 241 degrees. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the tailwind component was 1 knot. The enroute climb started 1 mile north of the airport, where the aircraft climbed from 7,992 feet above sea level to 19,582 feet above sea level, an increase of 11,589 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 53 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 6 miles north of Marquetalia, Colombia, and lasted for 52 minutes, covering a distance of 51 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its descent 2 miles north of Facatativa, Colombia, and descended from 19,742 feet above sea level to 12,686 feet above sea level, a decrease of 7,056 feet in 5 minutes, covering a distance of 25 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise resumed 2 miles southeast of Bogota, Colombia, and lasted for 7 minutes, covering a distance of 25 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its descent 9 miles west of Restrepo, Colombia, and descended from 13,081 feet above sea level to 4,302 feet above sea level, a decrease of 8,780 feet in 9 minutes, covering a distance of 27 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started again overhead SKWF La Realidad Airport Villavicencio, Colombia, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent overhead SKDW La Colina Airport Cumaral, Colombia, and descended from 3,953 feet above sea level to 2,252 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,701 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 28 at SKAP Gomez Nino Apiay Air Base was made from the east, heading 275.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,021 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 28, which had a length of 2,500 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 99 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 210 meters, and the touchdown speed was 95 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was hard at -466 feet per minute.
The total landing distance was 687 meters, which accounted for 27% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, a process that took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 201 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 66 minutes. The aircraft used 586 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The ATR 72 aircraft successfully landed at SKAP Gomez Nino Apiay Air Base, achieving a high score of 94.4%. The final approach to runway 28 was conducted from the east, heading 275.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,021 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was well-executed, with a good threshold height and a slightly below-target threshold speed of 99 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft performed well, with a touchdown distance of 210 meters, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown speed of 95 knots was also good, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. However, the touchdown rate was slightly hard at -466 feet per minute (fpm), which may require some attention to ensure a more gradual descent in future approaches.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 22°C and a light wind of 1 knot from 203°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, and the headwind component was zero, which contributed to a smooth and stable approach.
The total landing distance of 687 meters was 27% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the aircraft was able to stop quickly and efficiently after touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft performed well in terms of speed, distance, and alignment. However, the hard touchdown rate may require some attention to ensure a more gradual descent in future approaches.
