Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,305 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,305 m of the 4,019 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 945 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The Boeing 777-300 then departed from runway 05R at RCTP Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,346 meters, which is 40% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 202 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were a temperature of 15°C, with a wind speed of 18 knots at 39 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 18 knots. The aircraft climbed from an initial altitude of 1,112 feet above sea level to a cruising altitude of 34,406 feet, an increase of 33,294 feet in 13 minutes, covering a distance of 67 nautical miles.
The enroute climb started over RCTP Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and continued until the aircraft reached the cruising altitude. The enroute level cruise then began 21 miles west of RCMQ Taichung International Airport, lasting for 170 minutes and covering a distance of 1,234 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent from 35,392 feet above sea level to 9,129 feet, a decrease of 26,264 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 43 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then started again 6 miles east of VTBS Suvarnabhumi Airport, lasting for 4 minutes and covering a distance of 13 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 01R at VTBS Suvarnabhumi Airport began from the south, with the aircraft heading at 194.0 degrees at 1 nautical mile and 1,777 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with the touchdown point being 527 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 134 knots, which was good, but the touchdown rate was fair at -230 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.1 meters from the centreline, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.2 meters from the centreline. The total landing distance was 2,222 meters, which is 55% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 23°C, with a wind speed of 14 knots at 50 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 11 knots.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,384 nautical miles, taking a total of 237 minutes, and the aircraft used 29,703 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport, with a score of 83.1%. The final approach to runway 01R was initiated from the south, with a heading of 194.0° at 1 nautical mile and 1,777 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was well-executed, with a threshold speed of 139 knots, which is within the acceptable range.
However, there were some minor issues during the landing. The threshold height at 72 feet agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly higher than desired at the point of touchdown. Additionally, the touchdown point was 527 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight over-shooting of the intended landing spot.
The touchdown speed of 134 knots was within the acceptable range, but the touchdown rate of -230 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair. A more ideal touchdown rate would be closer to -150 to -200 fpm. Furthermore, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.1 meters from the centerline, which may have contributed to the slight over-shooting of the touchdown zone.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 23°C and wind speeds of 14 knots at 50°. The crosswind component was 8 knots, while the headwind component was 11 knots. These conditions would not have significantly impacted the landing.
The total landing distance of 2,222 meters was 55% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.2 meters from the centerline, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended path during the rollout phase.
Overall, while there were some minor issues during the landing, the Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport with a score of 83.1%.
