Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 9,099 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 9,099 ft of the 10,620 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,545 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 24 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 18L at KAUS Austin Bergstrom International Airport. The takeoff distance was 126 feet, which was 1% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 153 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 54°F and a wind speed of 6 knots at 0°. The crosswind was 0 knots, and there was a tailwind of 6 knots. After departing from Austin, the aircraft began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile north of the 02XS Seidel Ranch Airport. The climb took 14 minutes and covered a distance of 83 nautical miles, with the aircraft rising from 1,504 feet above sea level to 33,891 feet.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 8 miles north of the XA41 Lone Star Flying Service Airport. This phase of the flight lasted 42 minutes and covered a distance of 262 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 23 miles northwest of the 3XS8 Ken Ada Ranch Airport. The descent took 30 minutes and covered a distance of 110 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 34,099 feet to 5,243 feet.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its final approach to runway 22 at KELP El Paso International Airport. The approach was made from the northeast, with a heading of 230.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,313 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 22, which had a length of 10,620 feet. The threshold height was well above the target, and the threshold speed was slightly above target at 144 knots.
The touchdown point was 2,205 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 132 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -275 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at El Paso were a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 8 knots at 20°. The crosswind was 4 knots, and there was a tailwind of 7 knots.
The total landing distance was 8,859 feet, which was 83% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking, which took 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 465 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 101 minutes. The aircraft used 8,868 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at KELP El Paso International Airport, with a final approach score of 81.2%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the northeast, heading 230.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,313 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 22, which has a length of 10,620 feet. The threshold height at 75 feet agl was well above the target, indicating a safe margin for the aircraft to touch down. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 144 knots, which may have contributed to a slightly faster touchdown speed.
The touchdown point was 2,205 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively long distance. The touchdown speed of 132 knots was a little fast, and the touchdown rate of -275 feet per minute (fpm) was fair. Despite these minor issues, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 8 knots at 20°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, and the tailwind component was 7 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly faster touchdown speed.
The total landing distance was 8,859 feet, which is 83% of the runway length. This indicates that the aircraft had a relatively long rollout distance, but the runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was well-controlled during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor issues that could be addressed to improve the score.
