Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 8,476 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 8,476 ft of the 11,194 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,314 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A300 taxied from the parking area to runway 06 at HKJK Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in 10 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 06, the aircraft used 10,155 ft of runway, representing 75 % of the available length, and lifted off at 181 kt. Ambient conditions were 91 °F with a wind of 3 kt from 70 °, a cross-wind component of 1 kt and a head-wind component of 2 kt.
Climb commenced 4 miles north-east of HKJK, ascending from 6,145 ft asl to 33,978 ft asl, an increase of 27,833 ft achieved in 30 minutes while covering 222 nm.
The first en-route level cruise began 19 miles north-east of Kondoa (Dodoma Region, Tanzania) and continued for 167 minutes, during which 1,298 nm were flown.
A second level cruise segment started 6 miles south-east of Alberton (Gauteng, South Africa) and lasted 3 minutes, covering an additional 9 nm.
Descent was initiated 12 miles west of Siyabuswa (Mpumalanga, South Africa), with the aircraft descending from 33,615 ft asl to 8,002 ft asl, a loss of 25,612 ft in 18 minutes while traversing 103 nm.
The final approach to runway 03R at FAOR O.R. Tambo International Airport was flown from the south, on a heading of 15.0 °, at 4 nm and 1,205 ft agl.
Landing on runway 03R, which is 11,194 ft long, occurred with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 156 kt, slightly above target. The touchdown point was 970 ft beyond the touchdown zone; touchdown speed was 147 kt and touchdown rate was -195 fpm. Runway touchdown alignment was perfect. Local weather reported a temperature of 52 °F, wind 6 kt from 60 °, a cross-wind of 4 kt and a head-wind of 4 kt. Total landing distance measured 8,232 ft, 74 % of the runway, and rollout alignment was very good.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in 7 minutes, covering a further 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 1,644 nm, required 234 minutes, and consumed 43,724 lbs of fuel.
The Airbus A300 entered final approach to runway 03R at FAOR O.R. Tambo International Airport from the south on a heading of 15.0° at 4 nm and 1,205 ft agl. The approach was assessed as stabilised at the 1,000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope and centreline all within limits.
During the threshold and flare the aircraft maintained a good threshold height. Threshold speed was slightly above target at 156 kt.
Touchdown occurred 970 ft beyond the touchdown zone. Touchdown speed was a little fast at 147 kt, while the vertical rate was good at minus 195 fpm. Runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The rollout used a total landing distance of 8,232 ft, representing 74 % of the runway, and rollout alignment was very good.
Reduce the threshold and touchdown speeds to meet the target values more closely; a few knots slower will bring the touchdown point nearer the intended aim point and maintain the high overall score.
