Fixing the bounce
Fast at the threshold, normal flare, and the runway seems to refuse the aircraft. The instinctive fix - pushing it on - causes the next one. A fast aircraft forced onto the runway touches nosewheel-first or nearly so. The tell is a touchdown that feels soft followed by a bounce that steepens. Pilots fix the bounce recovery; the cause was the 10 knots at the threshold.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 921 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 921 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 151 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a quick taxi from the parking area to the runway, taking less than a minute and covering a distance of less than a nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna C172, then departed from runway 10 at ENSB Svalbard Airport, Longyear, with a takeoff distance of 472 meters, which accounted for 22% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 68 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead ENSB Svalbard Airport, Longyear. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 711 feet above sea level to 5,065 feet, an increase of 4,354 feet, in just 5 minutes and covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began 7 miles northwest of the airport and lasted for 20 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 41 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent, which started 11 miles southeast of ENAS Ny-Ålesund Airport, Hamnerabben. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 3,948 feet above sea level to 1,372 feet, a decrease of 2,576 feet, in 6 minutes and covering a distance of 7 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 30 at ENAS Ny-Ålesund Airport, Hamnerabben, was made from the southeast, with the aircraft heading 296.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,238 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 30 was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 52 knots and a distance of 149 meters. The touchdown rate was a bit hard at -550 feet per minute, but the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 1 knot at 269°.
The total landing distance was 360 meters, which accounted for 39% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. The total flight distance was 60 nautical miles, and the flight took 37 minutes to complete, using 21 kilograms of fuel in the process.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at ENAS Ny-Ålesund Airport, Hamnerabben, with a score of 87.5%. The final approach was conducted from the south east, heading 296.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,238 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft was on a steady course for a smooth landing on runway 30, which has a length of 921 meters.
Upon touchdown, the threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft touched down at the correct point on the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 52 knots, which may have been due to the aircraft's descent rate or the pilot's decision to flare earlier than expected. Despite this, the touchdown distance of 149 meters was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 52 knots was also within acceptable limits.
One area of concern was the touchdown rate, which was reported as very hard at -550 feet per minute (fpm). This suggests that the aircraft may have touched down with a higher rate of descent than intended, which could have put additional stress on the landing gear and potentially affected the overall safety of the landing. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from 269°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a slight headwind of 1 knot, which may have helped to slow the aircraft down during the final approach.
The total landing distance of 360 meters was 39% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also reported as perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled during the rollout phase and did not deviate from the centerline.
Overall, while there were some minor issues with the landing, such as the slightly low threshold speed and the hard touchdown rate, the Cessna C172 aircraft was able to land safely and efficiently at ENAS Ny-Ålesund Airport, Hamnerabben.
