Work on the flare
Next time
Begin raising the nose sooner, at 11 ft, rather than waiting until 5.4 ft.
What happened: The flare began late at 5.4 ft, below the normal band.
Watch for: Radio altimeter approaching 11 ft as the cue to start the flare.
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 667 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 667 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 387 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Cessna 172 taxied to runway 03 at EGHZ Kirkbymoorside and commenced the departure roll, achieving a take-off distance of 295 m which represented 56 % of the runway. Liftoff occurred at 63 kt. Ambient conditions were 15 °C with a wind of 13 kt from 338°, producing a 10 kt cross-wind component and an 8 kt head-wind component.
After liftoff the aircraft entered the climb phase overhead Kirkbymoorside, ascending from 1,292 ft asl to 3,000 ft asl - a gain of 1,708 ft - over a period of 3 minutes while covering 4 nm.
Cruise was established 2 miles north-east of Sinnington and was maintained for 30 minutes, during which 46 nm were flown at level altitude.
Descent began 1 mile west of EGGC Bridlington Airfield Boynton, with the aircraft descending from 2,727 ft asl to 1,797 ft asl - a loss of 930 ft - in 3 minutes while traversing 3 nm.
The final approach to runway 27 at EGWO Eddsfield Airfield was executed from the east on a heading of 263.0° at 4 nm and 1,276 ft agl.
Landing was made on runway 27, whose length is 667 m. The threshold height was satisfactory and the threshold speed was recorded at 62 kt. Touchdown occurred beyond the midpoint of the runway, using more than 50 % of the available length, at a speed of 60 kt and a vertical rate of minus 210 fpm. Alignment at touchdown was perfect. Local weather at the time was 14 °C with a wind of 13 kt from 338°, giving a 13 kt cross-wind component and a 3 kt head-wind component. The total landing distance measured 493 m, representing 74 % of the runway.
During rollout the aircraft remained aligned with the runway centreline, completing the landing roll without deviation.
In total the flight covered 59 nm, required 41 minutes of flight time, and consumed 12 kg of fuel.
The Cessna 172 entered the final approach to runway 27 at EGWO Eddsfield Airfield from the east on a heading of 263.0° at 4 nm and 1,276 ft agl. The approach was assessed as stabilised at the 1,000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope and centreline all within limits.
At the threshold the runway length was 667 m, the threshold height was reported as good and the threshold speed was good at 62 kt.
Touchdown occurred well beyond the aim point, using more than 50 % of the available runway. The touchdown speed was 60 kt, described as a little fast, and the touchdown rate was fair at minus 210 fpm. Runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The total landing distance was 493 m, representing 74 % of the runway, and the rollout alignment was perfect.
With a score of 92.1 % the landing was strong overall; concentrating on achieving an earlier touchdown point near the 300 m aim point and reducing the touchdown speed closer to the 62 kt threshold speed will tighten the remaining margins.
