Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 6,975 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 6,975 ft of the 11,076 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,007 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Boeing 777-300 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at UUEE Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow, Russia. This process took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 24L, with a takeoff distance of 2,753 feet, which accounted for 23% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 196 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of the airport, it encountered local weather conditions of 56°F temperature and a wind speed of 6 knots at 0°. The crosswind was 6 knots, and the tailwind was 2 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile west of the airport, where the aircraft climbed from 1,565 feet above sea level to 29,033 feet above sea level, an increase of 27,468 feet in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 88 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered a level cruise, starting 6 miles northeast of USTC Staritsa Airport in Staritsa, Russia. This cruise lasted for 24 minutes, covering a distance of 174 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 29,126 feet above sea level to 31,162 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,036 feet in 5 minutes, covering a distance of 37 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued its journey, entering another level cruise, starting 7 miles southeast of Fornosovo in Leningrad Oblast, Russia. This cruise lasted for 33 minutes, covering a distance of 232 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 31,295 feet above sea level to 32,423 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,128 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered a long level cruise, starting 8 miles west of Vesanto in Pohjois-Savo, Finland. This cruise lasted for 334 minutes, covering a distance of 2,564 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 31,534 feet above sea level to 33,195 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,661 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 14 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 78 miles east of CYCB Cambridge Bay Airport in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada. This cruise lasted for 78 minutes, covering a distance of 2,049 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 16 miles northwest of Searles Valley in California, United States. The descent from 35,964 feet above sea level to 1,381 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,583 feet in 29 minutes, covering a distance of 128 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 25L at KLAX Los Angeles International Airport was made from the east, heading 263.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,236 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 25L, which had a length of 11,076 feet, was successful, with a threshold speed slightly above the target at 151 knots. The touchdown point was 1,662 feet beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 134 knots and a smooth touchdown rate of -117 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 25 feet from the centerline, but the runway rollout alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 64°F temperature and a wind speed of 13 knots at 260°, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 13 knots. The total landing distance was 6,
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at Los Angeles International Airport (KLAX) on runway 25L. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 263.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,236 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, which is a crucial aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was slightly above the target threshold speed of 150 kt, registering at 151 kt. However, the touchdown speed of 134 kt was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown rate of -117 fpm was also smooth, further emphasizing the pilot's skill in executing a safe landing.
Despite the good touchdown speed and rate, the aircraft's touchdown point was 1,662 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone. This deviation from the centerline was attributed to a runway touchdown position misalignment of 25 feet. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 64°F and a wind speed of 13 kt from 260°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 kt, while the headwind component was 13 kt, which helped to reduce the aircraft's ground speed and improve the landing performance.
The total landing distance of 6,730 feet was 61% of the available runway length of 11,076 feet. This indicates that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance, considering the runway length and the prevailing weather conditions. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the pilot demonstrating good control and decision-making skills throughout the approach and landing phases.
