Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,202 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 438 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 18 at RJGG Chubu Centrair International Airport in Japan. The takeoff distance was 1,139 meters, which is 33% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 147 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 20°C, with a wind speed of 7 knots at 120°.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it began its enroute climb from 1,071 feet above sea level to 38,153 feet above sea level, an increase of 37,083 feet in 35 minutes, covering a distance of 202 nautical miles. The enroute climb started overhead RJGG Chubu Centrair International Airport, and the aircraft then transitioned to a level cruise. The first level cruise segment started 11 miles northwest of RJOC Izumo Enmusubi Airport in Japan and lasted for 134 minutes, covering a distance of 1,114 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its enroute descent from 37,970 feet above sea level to 18,782 feet above sea level, a decrease of 19,188 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 112 nautical miles. The descent started 16 miles south of ZBDS Ordos Ejin Horo Airport in China. The aircraft then transitioned to another level cruise segment, which started 25 miles east of Shizuishan in China and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The final descent segment started 25 miles east of Shizuishan and took the aircraft from 18,792 feet above sea level to 4,956 feet above sea level, a decrease of 13,836 feet in 12 minutes, covering a distance of 58 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 21 at ZLIC Yinchuan Hedong International Airport from the northeast, heading 209.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,218 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 21 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 439 meters, which is good. The touchdown speed was slightly above the target at 142 knots, but the touchdown rate was smooth at -100 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 8°C, with a wind speed of 8 knots at 273°.
The total landing distance was 1,019 meters, which is 32% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft then began taxiing to the parking from the runway, which took approximately 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,493 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 191 minutes. The aircraft used 10,240 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at ZLIC Yinchuan Hedong International Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its approach and landing procedures. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the north east, heading 209.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,218 feet above ground level.
The final approach to runway 21 was executed with a high degree of precision, with the aircraft maintaining a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 132 knots was slightly above the target speed, but the touchdown distance of 439 meters was well within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -100 feet per minute was also smooth, indicating a well-executed landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 8°C and a wind speed of 8 knots from 273°. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots. Despite these conditions, the aircraft maintained perfect runway touchdown alignment, demonstrating the pilot's skill and experience.
The total landing distance of 1,019 meters was 32% of the runway length, indicating a good balance between speed and control. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing process.
Overall, the landing of the Boeing 737-700 at ZLIC Yinchuan Hedong International Airport was a success, with the aircraft demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its approach and landing procedures. The pilot's skill and experience were evident throughout the landing, and the aircraft performed well in the challenging weather conditions.
