Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,396 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 443 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A321, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport, taking 22 minutes and covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 23, with a takeoff distance of 1,997 meters, which was 62% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 170 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its initial cruising altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 24°C temperature and a wind speed of 15 knots at 260 degrees. The crosswind was 8 knots, and the headwind was 13 knots. The enroute climb started 2 miles west of the airport, with the aircraft ascending from 1,603 feet above sea level to 32,618 feet, an increase of 31,015 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 117 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered a level cruise, starting 1 mile southeast of the Gravel Run Airport in Saegertown, Pennsylvania, and lasted for 76 minutes, covering 550 nautical miles. The aircraft continued to climb and cruise, with multiple enroute climbs and level cruises, each lasting for varying periods of time and covering different distances.
One of the notable climbs took place 5 miles west of the Plantation Airpark in Sylvania, Georgia, where the aircraft ascended from 33,209 feet to 35,225 feet in just 3 minutes, covering 27 nautical miles. Another significant climb occurred 7 miles southeast of the Giron Airport in Aguada de Pasajeros, Cuba, where the aircraft climbed from 35,217 feet to 37,387 feet in 3 minutes, covering 28 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued to cruise at various altitudes, with the final level cruise starting 33 miles south of the Giron Airport and lasting for 126 minutes, covering 990 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 15 miles north of Huarmey, Peru, and descending from 39,322 feet to 1,532 feet in 24 minutes, covering 142 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 15 at Jorge Chávez International Airport took place from the northwest, with the aircraft heading 152.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,405 feet above ground level. However, the aircraft performed a go-around at 12 feet above ground level. The aircraft then landed on runway 15, with a touchdown point 347 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 138 knots, which was too fast, and the touchdown rate was fair at -209 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.1 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 13.7 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 17°C temperature and a wind speed of 7 knots at 180 degrees, with a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 6 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,598 meters, which was 47% of the runway length. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 3,388 nautical miles, taking 503 minutes, and the aircraft used 15,573 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed on runway 15 at SPIM Jorge Chávez International Airport, achieving an overall score of 84.9%. The final approach was initiated from the north-west, heading 152.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,405 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's performance during the landing was satisfactory, with a good threshold speed of 137 kt, which was slightly above the target speed.
However, the threshold height at 65 ft agl was above the target, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal landing configuration. Nevertheless, the subsequent landings on the same runway showed improvement, with a good threshold height and threshold speeds of 138 kt and 139 kt, respectively. These speeds were slightly above the target, but still within acceptable limits.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was 138 kt, which was considered too fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -209 fpm, indicating a moderate deceleration. The touchdown point was 347 m beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the ideal landing position. Furthermore, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.1 m from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 17 °C, with a wind speed of 7 kt at 180°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 kt, while the headwind component was 6 kt. The total landing distance was 1,598 m, which accounted for 47% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 13.7 m from the centreline.
Overall, while the aircraft's performance during the landing was satisfactory, there were some deviations from the ideal landing configuration, including a slightly above-target threshold speed, a too-fast touchdown speed, and a misaligned touchdown position. Nevertheless, the aircraft's ability to maintain control and stability during the landing was evident, and the pilot's skills were demonstrated in navigating the aircraft to a safe touchdown.
