Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,019 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,019 m of the 3,148 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,007 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Palma de Mallorca Airport, the Airbus A350-900 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. As the aircraft lined up on runway 06R, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 38 °C and a gentle headwind of 5 knots from a direction of 79 °. With a crosswind of just 2 knots, the aircraft was able to depart smoothly, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 164 knots in a distance of 1,344 meters, which was 52% of the runway length.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile east of the airport and continued for 22 minutes, covering a distance of 162 nautical miles. The aircraft climbed from an initial altitude of 938 feet above sea level to a maximum altitude of 39,998 feet, an increase of 39,060 feet. Following this climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 32 minutes and covered a distance of 278 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 3 miles northwest of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France, and continued for 19 minutes, covering a distance of 126 nautical miles. The aircraft descended from a maximum altitude of 39,994 feet to a final altitude of 3,991 feet.
As the aircraft approached Zürich Airport, it entered a final level cruise phase, which lasted for just 2 minutes and covered a distance of 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 14, aligning itself with the runway from the northwest. Despite a crosswind of 4 knots, the aircraft landed smoothly, touching down at a speed of 126 knots and a rate of 17 feet per minute. The touchdown point was 617 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, a process that took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 584 nautical miles, and the aircraft used 8,887 kilograms of fuel during the flight, which lasted a total of 93 minutes.
The final approach to runway 14 at LSZH Zürich Airport from the north west was executed with a heading of 136.0° at 4 nm and 1,458 ft above ground level. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 131 kt, which was within the acceptable range. The aircraft maintained a steady descent, touching down at a speed of 126 kt, which was also within the desired parameters. The touchdown rate of 17 fpm was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled touchdown.
However, the touchdown point was 617 m beyond the touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight over-shooting. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.2 m from the centreline, which could have been due to a slight deviation in the approach path. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 18 °C and a wind of 15 kt at 122°, may have contributed to the slight misalignment. The crosswind component was minimal at 4 kt, while the headwind component was 15 kt, which may have helped to stabilize the approach.
The total landing distance of 1,964 m was 63% of the runway length, which was within the acceptable range. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.7 m from the centreline, which was consistent with the slight deviation in the approach path. Overall, the landing was satisfactory, with a score of 84.3%. While there were some minor deviations, the pilot maintained good control and the aircraft touched down smoothly, indicating a high level of proficiency.
