Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,608 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,023 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna C172, then departed from runway 19 at ZUTF Chengdu Tianfu International Airport. The takeoff distance was 470 meters, which is 12% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 65 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 16°C, a wind speed of 1 knot at 270°, with no crosswind or headwind.
As the aircraft climbed, it started enroute climb 1 mile northwest of ZUTF Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, reaching an altitude of 7,437 feet above sea level (asl) from an initial altitude of 2,249 ft asl. This climb took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 11 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a level cruise, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered 3 nautical miles, starting 12 miles northwest of ZUTF Chengdu Tianfu International Airport.
The enroute descent started 14 miles southeast of ZUDS Chengdu Taipingsi, with the aircraft descending from 7,104 ft asl to 3,297 ft asl, a decrease of 3,807 ft in 5 minutes and covering 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered 2 nautical miles, starting 8 miles south of ZCHE Chengdu Airport. The final descent started 7 miles southeast of ZUUU Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, with the aircraft descending from 2,924 ft asl to 2,330 ft asl, a decrease of 594 ft in 2 minutes and covering 2 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, which lasted for 6 minutes and covered 5 nautical miles, starting 6 miles south of ZUUU Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. The final approach to runway 20L at ZUUU Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport was made from the northeast, with the aircraft heading 208.0° at 0 nautical miles and 325 feet above ground level (agl).
The landing on runway 20L was characterized by a touchdown point that was 126 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 62 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was very hard at -504 feet per minute (fpm), and the runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 15.5 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions remained the same, with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 1 knot at 269°.
The total landing distance was 723 meters, which is 20% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 20.8 meters from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 31 nautical miles, taking 27 minutes, and the aircraft used 12 kilograms of fuel.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed on runway 20L at ZUUU Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, but the landing was not without its issues. The final approach was initiated from the north east, heading 208.0° at 0 nm and 325 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, but the touchdown point was 126 m beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot.
The threshold height at 154 ft agl was excessively over the target, suggesting that the aircraft may have been too high during the final approach. However, the threshold speed was good at 63 kt, indicating that the pilot maintained a suitable airspeed during the landing. The touchdown speed of 62 kt was a little fast, which may have contributed to the hard touchdown rate of -504 fpm. A hard touchdown rate can be a concern as it may put excessive stress on the aircraft's landing gear and other components.
The runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 15.5 m from the centreline, which may have been due to a combination of factors including crosswind, pilot error, or a deviation from the standard approach procedure. The local weather conditions were relatively calm, with a temperature of 16 °C and a wind speed of 1 kt at 269°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 kt, and there was no headwind component.
The total landing distance of 723 m was 20% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. However, the runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 20.8 m from the centreline, which may have been due to the same factors that contributed to the initial touchdown position deviation. Overall, while the landing was successful, there were several areas for improvement, including maintaining a more suitable airspeed, improving the threshold height, and aligning the aircraft with the centreline during the final approach and rollout.
