Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 6,550 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 6,550 ft of the 11,800 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,649 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The F14B aircraft departed from runway 29R at KFAT Fresno Yosemite International Airport, taking off with a distance of 5,221 feet, which is 57% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 190 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 80°F and a wind speed of 7 knots from 209 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 7 knots and a tailwind of 1 knot.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 2 miles east of Old Fig Garden, California, and reached an altitude of 6,692 feet above sea level, increasing by 5,363 feet in just 1 minute and covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent 2 miles northeast of 37CN Arnold Ranch Airport, Fresno, California, and descended from 6,641 feet to 1,667 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,974 feet in 3 minutes and covering 17 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued its flight, climbing from 1,697 feet above sea level to 6,122 feet above sea level in 2 minutes and covering 7 nautical miles, starting its enroute climb 2 miles southeast of 5CL9 Table Mountain Field Auberry, California. The aircraft then leveled out and cruised for 2 minutes, covering 12 nautical miles, before starting another climb 14 miles east of Bass Lake, California. The aircraft climbed from 6,516 feet above sea level to 19,933 feet above sea level, an increase of 13,417 feet in 3 minutes and covering 17 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its descent 10 miles southwest of June Lake, California, and descended from 18,661 feet above sea level to 2,093 feet above sea level, a decrease of 16,568 feet in 3 minutes and covering 26 nautical miles. The aircraft continued its flight, climbing from 2,102 feet above sea level to 3,862 feet above sea level in 2 minutes and covering 10 nautical miles, starting its enroute climb 1 mile west of El Portal, California.
The aircraft then began its descent 7 miles southeast of Greeley Hill, California, and descended from 3,844 feet above sea level to 2,777 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,067 feet in 2 minutes and covering 12 nautical miles. The aircraft continued its flight, climbing from 2,764 feet above sea level to 3,505 feet above sea level in 2 minutes and covering 12 nautical miles, starting its enroute climb 2 miles south of KTUO Tuolumne City Airport, Tuolumne City, California.
The aircraft then began its descent 8 miles northwest of 34CN Bonanza Hills Airport, Snelling, California, and descended from 3,516 feet above sea level to 709 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,807 feet in 2 minutes and covering 12 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 13 at KMER Castle Airport from the northwest, heading 142.0 degrees at 1 nautical mile and 472 feet above ground level.
The aircraft landed on runway 13 at KMER Castle Airport, which has a length of 11,800 feet. The threshold height at 63 feet above ground level was above the target, and the threshold speed was excessively high at 354 knots. The touchdown point was 2,345 feet beyond the touchdown zone, but the touchdown speed of 149 knots was good, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -148 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 13 feet from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time
The F14B aircraft successfully landed at KMER Castle Airport, but with some notable areas for improvement. The final approach was initiated from the north-west, heading 142.0° at 1 nautical mile and 472 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 13, which has a length of 11,800 feet.
However, there were some discrepancies during the landing. The threshold height at 63 feet agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly high on its approach. Furthermore, the threshold speed was excessively high at 354 knots, which could have contributed to the high touchdown point. The touchdown point was 2,345 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the ideal landing spot.
Despite these issues, the touchdown speed of 149 knots was good, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -148 feet per minute (fpm). This suggests that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the landing. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 13 feet from the centreline, which may have been due to the high threshold speed and subsequent deviation from the ideal landing spot.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 77°F and a wind speed of 1 knot at 265°. The crosswind was minimal at 1 knot, and there was no headwind. These conditions would have made the landing relatively straightforward.
The total landing distance was 6,346 feet, which is 54% of the runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, but it is not excessively long. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the F14B aircraft landed safely at KMER Castle Airport, there are areas for improvement in terms of approach speed and touchdown point. With some adjustments to the approach and landing technique, the pilot may be able to achieve a more ideal landing.
