Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 637 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 637 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 128 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 32 at 68D Reds Horse Ranch Usfs, where the aircraft, a Rans S6S, took off with a takeoff distance of 107 meters, which accounted for 16% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 53 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 270 degrees, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it began its enroute climb from 4,573 feet above sea level (asl) to 4,425 ft asl, an increase of 148 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. This climb phase took place overhead 7OR0 Minam Lodge Airport Cove in Oregon, United States.
After reaching the desired altitude, the aircraft initiated its enroute descent from 4,432 ft asl to 3,735 ft asl, a decrease of 697 feet in 2 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. This descent phase began overhead 68D Reds Horse Ranch Usfs Enterprise in Oregon, United States.
The final approach to runway 31 at 6OR9 Reds Wallowa Horse Ranch Airport was made from the southeast, heading 317.0 degrees at an altitude of 125 feet above ground level (agl) and a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft landed on the runway with a touchdown distance of 126 meters, which was considered good, and a touchdown speed of 39 knots, which was slightly above the target speed.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were the same as during takeoff, with a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 270 degrees, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.5 meters from the centerline, but the runway rollout alignment was very good.
The total landing distance was 236 meters, which accounted for 37% of the runway. The total flight distance was 3 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 5 minutes, during which the aircraft used 0 kilograms of fuel.
The Rans S6S aircraft successfully landed at the Reds Wallowa Horse Ranch Airport, achieving a score of 97.3%. The final approach to runway 31 was initiated from the southeast, heading 317.0° at an altitude of 125 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 39 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown distance of 126 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown speed was a little fast, which may have been due to the pilot's decision to flare the aircraft slightly earlier than necessary.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 3.5 meters, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's approach path. Despite this, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a light wind of 2 knots from 270°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, and the headwind component was 1 knot, which had a negligible effect on the landing.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down on the runway and coming to a stop in a controlled manner. The pilot's skills and experience were evident in the smooth and controlled descent, and the good runway rollout alignment. However, there is room for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and alignment with the centerline.
