Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 637 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 637 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 129 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 32 at 68D Reds Horse Ranch Usfs, where the aircraft, a Rans S6S, took off with a takeoff distance of 104 meters, which accounted for 15% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 45 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots at 270 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 1 knot.
The enroute level cruise phase of the flight was brief, lasting less than a minute and covering less than a nautical mile, as the aircraft flew overhead 7OR0 Minam Lodge Airport Cove in Oregon, United States. This was followed by an enroute climb, which started at the same location and took the aircraft from an altitude of 3,980 feet above sea level to 4,432 feet above sea level, an increase of 452 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles.
The enroute descent phase of the flight began overhead 68D Reds Horse Ranch Usfs Enterprise in Oregon, United States, where the aircraft descended from 4,439 feet above sea level to 3,720 feet above sea level, a decrease of 719 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of less than a nautical mile.
The final approach to runway 31 at 6OR9 Reds Wallowa Horse Ranch Airport was made from the southeast, heading 317.0 degrees at an altitude of 120 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown speed of 30 knots and a touchdown distance of 127 meters. The touchdown rate was also good at -178 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.5 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were the same as at the time of departure, with a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots at 270 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 1 knot. The total landing distance was 229 meters, which accounted for 36% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
In conclusion, the flight was a successful one, with a total distance of 4 nautical miles and a total flight time of 6 minutes. The aircraft used no fuel during the flight, indicating a high level of efficiency.
The Rans S6S aircraft successfully landed at the Reds Wallowa Horse Ranch Airport, achieving a score of 97.8%. The final approach to runway 31 was initiated from the southeast, heading 317.0° at an altitude of 120 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 30 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown distance of 127 meters was also satisfactory, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown rate of -178 feet per minute (fpm) was within acceptable limits, further emphasizing the pilot's skill in executing a safe landing.
However, there was a slight deviation in the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft landing 3.5 meters off-centerline. This minor misalignment did not appear to have any significant impact on the overall landing performance.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 15°C and a gentle wind of 2 knots from 270°. The crosswind and headwind components were minimal, at 1 knot each, which likely contributed to the smooth landing.
The total landing distance of 229 meters was 36% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the post-landing phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the pilot demonstrating good control and decision-making skills throughout the approach and landing phases.
