Fixing the bounce
Fast at the threshold, normal flare, and the runway seems to refuse the aircraft. The instinctive fix - pushing it on - causes the next one. A fast aircraft forced onto the runway touches nosewheel-first or nearly so. The tell is a touchdown that feels soft followed by a bounce that steepens. Pilots fix the bounce recovery; the cause was the 10 knots at the threshold.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out. These checks are the approach's score.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,863 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,863 m of the 3,284 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 692 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Aircraft taxied from the parking area to runway 05R at NZAA Auckland International Airport in less than 1 minute, covering less than 1 nm.
The take-off roll on runway 05R was 1,203 m, representing 37 % of the available runway. Liftoff was achieved at 146 kt. Ambient temperature was 35 °C with a wind of 3 kt from 1°, giving a 3 kt cross-wind component and a 1 kt head-wind component.
Climb commenced overhead NZAA, the aircraft ascending from 1,004 ft asl to 1,577 ft asl - a gain of 573 ft - in 1 minute while covering 3 nm.
Level cruise began 2 mi south of Wiri and was maintained for 4 minutes, during which 11 nm were flown.
Final approach to runway 05R was established from the southwest on a heading of 71.0° at 1 nm and 535 ft agl.
During the approach the aircraft descended from 912 ft agl to 48 ft agl in 61 seconds, satisfying the stabilisation gates.
Landing on runway 05R (runway length 3,284 m) occurred with a threshold speed slightly above target at 126 kt. Touchdown was 266 m beyond the touchdown zone, the speed at touchdown was 109 kt and the vertical rate was smooth at minus 113 fpm. The touchdown point was offset 8.8 m from the centreline. Local weather was 34 °C with wind 3 kt from 1°, providing a 3 kt cross-wind and a 1 kt head-wind.
The total landing distance recorded was 1,773 m, 54 % of the runway, and rollout alignment was off centreline by 8.2 m.
Overall, the flight covered 21 nm, required 8 (units) of time, and used 86 kg of fuel.
The final approach to runway 05R at NZAA Auckland International Airport was flown from the south-west on a heading of 71.0° at 1 NM and 535 ft agl. At the 1 000 ft gate the approach was assessed as unstable, being off the glideslope, and the aircraft descended from 912 ft agl to 48 ft agl in 61 seconds, scoring on the stabilisation gates. Ambient temperature was 34 °C with a wind of 3 kt from 1°, giving a 3 kt crosswind component and a 1 kt headwind.
At threshold the speed was slightly above target at 126 kt and the threshold height was good. The flare produced a smooth touchdown rate of minus 113 fpm.
Touchdown occurred 266 m beyond the touchdown zone with a touchdown speed of 109 kt, which was judged good. The aircraft’s touchdown point was misaligned by 8.8 m from the centreline.
During rollout the aircraft remained slightly off centreline by 8.2 m and required a total landing distance of 1 773 m, representing 54 % of the 3 284 m runway length.
The score of 71.9 % reflects the need to tighten approach stability and centreline tracking. Improving glideslope capture and maintaining precise lateral alignment will reduce the 8-meter deviations observed at touchdown and rollout.
