Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 913 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 913 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 112 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna 152, then departed from runway 33 at ENSS Vardø Airport, Svartnes. The takeoff distance was 253 meters, which is 25% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 59 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 22°C, a wind speed of 2 knots at 270°, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 1 knot.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead ENSS Vardø Airport, Svartnes. The climb took 3 minutes and covered 3 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 521 feet above sea level to 2,895 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,375 feet. The enroute level cruise then began 2 miles north of Kiberg, and lasted for 9 minutes, covering 15 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 13 miles southwest of Kiberg, and took 3 minutes to descend from 2,852 feet above sea level to 1,500 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,352 feet. The descent covered 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute level cruise, this time 9 miles east of ENVD Vadsø Airport Vadsø, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 25 at ENVD Vadsø Airport was made from the east, with a heading of 267.0° at 4 nautical miles and 789 feet above ground level. The landing was made on a runway length of 913 meters, with a good threshold height. The threshold speed was a little below the target speed at 48 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 110 meters, and the touchdown speed was 42 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was also good at -164 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 21°C, a wind speed of 2 knots at 269°, with a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 2 knots. The total landing distance was 341 meters, which is 37% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight distance was 33 nautical miles, and the flight took 26 minutes. The aircraft used 6 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna 152 aircraft successfully landed at ENVD Vadsø Airport, achieving a score of 99.1%. The final approach to runway 25 was conducted from the east, with a heading of 267.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 789 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 48 knots. The touchdown distance was also satisfactory at 110 meters, and the touchdown speed was maintained at a good 42 knots. The touchdown rate of -164 feet per minute was within acceptable limits, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 21°C and a gentle wind of 2 knots from 269°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a slight headwind of 2 knots, which did not significantly impact the landing.
The total landing distance of 341 meters was only 37% of the runway length, indicating a short and controlled rollout. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilot's skill and control during the landing phase.
Overall, the landing was executed flawlessly, with the aircraft touching down on the runway with a good speed and distance, and the pilot maintaining perfect control throughout the rollout. The high score of 99.1% reflects the pilot's expertise and the aircraft's performance during the landing.
