Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,048 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,048 m of the 2,988 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,015 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A350-900 taxied from the parking area to the departure runway in 3 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
Departure roll was conducted on runway 36L at ZBAA Beijing Capital International Airport. The aircraft accelerated over a takeoff distance of 1,323 m, representing 41 % of the runway, and lifted off at 155 kt. Ambient conditions were a temperature of 34 °C, wind from 169° at 10 kt, a 1 kt crosswind component and a 10 kt tailwind component.
Climb commenced approximately 1 mile north-west of ZBAA. The flight ascended from 1,012 ft asl to 40,778 ft asl, an increase of 39,766 ft, in 37 minutes while covering 269 nm.
Cruise began 53 miles west of Lushun (Liaoning Sheng, China) and continued for 150 minutes, during which 1,214 nm were flown at level altitude.
Descent was initiated 16 miles north of Mutsu (Aomori-ken, Japan). The aircraft descended from 41,001 ft asl to 1,354 ft asl, a loss of 39,647 ft, in 21 minutes, traversing 124 nm.
Final approach to runway 19R at RJCC New Chitose Airport was executed from the north, on a heading of 173.0° at 4 nm and 1,276 ft agl.
Landing on runway 19R, which is 2,988 m long, was performed with a good threshold height and a threshold speed slightly above target at 136 kt. Touchdown occurred 606 m beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 152 kt, which was noted as too fast. The touchdown rate was excellent at minus 94 fpm, and the touchdown point was misaligned by 12.7 m from the centreline. Local weather at the time was a temperature of 19 °C, wind from 210° at 9 kt, a 5 kt crosswind component and a 7 kt headwind component.
The total landing distance recorded was 1,974 m, representing 66 % of the runway, and the rollout was misaligned by 17.9 m from the centreline.
In total, the flight covered 1,613 nm, took 213 (units as provided), and consumed 19,767 kg of fuel.
The Airbus A350-900 approached runway 19R at RJCC New Chitose Airport from the north on a heading of 173.0° while 4 nm out and at 1,276 ft agl, with ambient temperature 19 °C, wind 9 kt from 210°, a 5 kt cross-wind component and a 7 kt head-wind component.
At threshold the aircraft maintained a good threshold height and the threshold speed was slightly above target at 136 kt.
Touchdown occurred 606 m beyond the designated touchdown zone, with a speed of 152 kt that was recorded as too fast, yet the vertical rate was excellent at minus 94 fpm. Lateral alignment at touchdown was off centreline by 12.7 m, and the total landing distance used was 1,974 m, representing 66 % of the runway length.
During rollout the aircraft remained misaligned by 17.9 m from the centreline.
Future landings should aim to achieve touchdown within the prescribed zone, targeting the aim point about 300 m (1,000 ft) from the threshold and managing speed to meet the target VREF. Maintaining precise lateral alignment through touchdown and rollout will further improve runway utilisation.
