Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,597 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,597 m of the 2,795 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 361 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 05L at Manchester Airport (EGCC), with a takeoff distance of 932 meters, which was 38% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 148 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 7°C temperature and a wind of 21 knots at 59°. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 21 knots. The enroute climb started overhead Manchester Airport, where the aircraft climbed from 1,261 feet above sea level to 4,734 feet above sea level, an increase of 3,473 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise then began 1 mile south west of Prestbury, lasting 2 minutes and covering 7 nautical miles. However, the aircraft soon began another climb, this time from 4,721 feet above sea level to 36,136 feet above sea level, an increase of 31,415 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 116 nautical miles. The climb took place overhead Congleton.
After the climb, the aircraft entered another level cruise, this time lasting 34 minutes and covering 226 nautical miles, starting 1 mile east of Greenhill. The enroute descent then began 2 miles south west of Boncelles, where the aircraft descended from 36,196 feet above sea level to 6,684 feet above sea level, a decrease of 29,512 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 100 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, lasting 2 minutes and covering 6 nautical miles, starting overhead Langenlonsheim. However, the descent soon began again, this time from 6,254 feet above sea level to 1,641 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,613 feet in 5 minutes, covering a distance of 14 nautical miles, starting overhead Bubenheim.
The final approach to runway 07L at Frankfurt Airport (EDDF) was made from the south west, heading 70.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,289 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 360 meters and a touchdown speed of 126 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -379 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.2 meters from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were -2°C temperature and a wind of 13 knots at 30°. The crosswind was 8 knots, while the headwind was 10 knots. The total landing distance was 1,508 meters, which was 54% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 486 nautical miles, taking 110 minutes, and the aircraft used 4,599 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed on runway 07L at Frankfurt Airport (EDDF) with a score of 96.3%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 70.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,289 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a critical aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was recorded at 131 knots, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 360 meters was also satisfactory, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft during the landing phase. The touchdown speed of 126 knots was also within the acceptable limits, and the touchdown rate of -379 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting a controlled descent.
However, there was a slight deviation in the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft being 3.2 meters off-centerline. This minor misalignment may have been due to the crosswind component of 8 knots, which was present during the landing. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of -2°C and a wind speed of 13 knots at 30°, may have also contributed to the slight deviation.
Despite the minor deviation, the total landing distance of 1,508 meters was within the acceptable range, accounting for only 54% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot had maintained control over the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot's skills and experience were evident in the execution of the maneuver.
