Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,269 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,269 ft of the 13,969 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 4,021 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The aircraft taxied from the parking area to runway 19 at KJAC Jackson Hole Airport, covering 10 nm in 17 minutes.
During the departure roll on runway 19, the aircraft used 2,844 ft of runway, representing 45 % of the available length, and lifted off at 96 kt. Ambient conditions were a temperature of 74 °F, wind 26 kt from 250 °, with a 20 kt cross-wind component and a 17 kt head-wind component.
Climb commenced one mile south of KJAC, with the airplane accelerating from 7,229 ft asl to 30,013 ft asl, an increase of 22,784 ft achieved in 20 minutes while covering 68 nm.
The first cruise segment began 17 miles southeast of West Yellowstone, Montana, and persisted for 62 minutes, during which 299 nm were flown at level altitude.
Descent started 12 miles northeast of CEQ4 Del Bonita / Whetstone International Airport, descending from 29,600 ft asl to 6,523 ft asl, a loss of 23,078 ft over 30 minutes and a distance of 136 nm.
A brief cruise followed overhead CED6 Highwood Airport, De Winton, Alberta, lasting 3 minutes and covering 9 nm.
The subsequent descent began 5 miles north of Heritage Pointe, Alberta, dropping from 6,500 ft asl to 4,958 ft asl, a decrease of 1,542 ft in 2 minutes while traveling 6 nm.
Final approach to runway 35R at CYYC Calgary International Airport was executed from the south, on a heading of 0.0 ° at 4 nm and 1,392 ft agl, then continued descending from 1,440 ft agl to 107 ft agl in 145 seconds, with the aircraft scoring on the stabilisation gates.
Landing on runway 35R, which is 13,969 ft long, occurred with a threshold height of 81 ft agl and a threshold speed of 102 kt, both above target. Touchdown was recorded 2,769 ft beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 67 kt, with a touchdown rate of minus 269 fpm and a lateral deviation of 24 ft from the centreline. Local weather at the time was a temperature of 54 °F, wind 18 kt from 340 °, a 6 kt cross-wind component and a 17 kt head-wind component.
The aircraft rolled out a total landing distance of 5,117 ft, representing 37 % of the runway, but runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 257 ft from the centreline.
After exiting the runway, the aircraft taxied to the parking area in 4 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 538 nm, required 129 minutes of elapsed time, and consumed 879 lb of fuel.
The final approach to runway 35R at CYYC Calgary International Airport was conducted from the south on a heading of 0.0° at 4 nm and 1,392 ft agl. At the 1,000 ft gate the approach was assessed as unstable, being more than 20 kt above VREF, and the descent from 1,440 ft agl to 107 ft agl took 145 seconds, with the flight scored on the stabilisation gates.
During the threshold and flare segment the threshold height of 81 ft agl was significantly above target and the threshold speed of 102 kt was well above target.
Touchdown occurred 2,769 ft beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 67 kt that was judged good, a touchdown rate of minus 269 fpm rated fair, and the aircraft was slightly misaligned by 24 ft from the centreline. The total landing distance was 5,117 ft, representing 37 % of the 13,969 ft runway, in conditions of 54 °F temperature, wind 18 kt from 340°, crosswind 6 kt and headwind 17 kt.
Rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 257 ft from the centreline.
With a score of 57.5 % the primary focus should be on achieving a stabilized approach within speed limits and maintaining centreline alignment through rollout to reduce the large misalignment observed.
